About
We love the combination of richness of fruit in 2017, but with austerity, direction and focus there as well.

About The Wine

The By Farr Chardonnay is a dazzling example of the heights possible for Australian Chardonnay.

A traditional Burgundian approach to crafting this wine by Nick Farr, like his father before him, gives this wine a power and refinement rarely seen outside of France.

The Chardonnay grows alongside the Sangreal Pinot Noir on the Farr vineyard atop limestone on an exposed North-facing slope. This site imparts a 'mineral' thread through the wine which is electric.

The 2017 is exquisitely well balanced as a young wine, the tension and drive, fruit and oak all in perfect harmony. It's a thrilling Chardonnay to drink.

About By Farr / Farr Rising

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in the country.

He was responsible for taking Bannockburn Vineyards in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is considered by many as Australia's leading producer of those same varieties.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier.

With Gary's son Nick now pulling the winemaking reigns alongside his father, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

DDS review

Alright! Here's a Chardonnay! A flurry of white peach, nectarine, lime splice, sweet cedar, and vanilla bean. Amazing generosity of flavour, but with austerity in tow, it fills the mouth with flinty, mineral-charged acidity keeping it all drawn tight. Oak frames everything beautifully. It slowly unwinds in the glass, a seductive Chardonnay strip-tease for the senses. Far out, I could drink this all day. Brilliant. Brilliant wine. - Different Drop Wine Team

Additional Info

From The Producer

Vineyard
The By Farr chardonnay comes from the same site as the Sangreal pinot noir—composed of red soil over limestone—and was planted in 1994. The limestone of this site is not exposed on the surface as at other sites. The limestone starts 20 to 30cm below the surface, to the depths of the root zone of the vines. It is a very exposed north-facing slope. The clones used for the chardonnay are a mixture of Dijon clones and Penfolds 58.

Vinification
The fruit is hand-picked then whole-bunch pressed in the winery. All the solids are collected and chilled before being put to barrel, which are 30 per cent new French oak. A natural fermentation will occur at cool temperatures over the next one to two months, and then a small amount of stirring helps start malolactic fermentation. The wine is then racked, fined and lightly filtered before bottling 11 months after picking. A very mineral site for chardonnay.
