About The Wine

There are only 0.7ha of beautiful 40+-year-old Grenache vines on the Rayner Block. The public knows the vineyard for its supreme Shiraz. Many a winemaker has sought it for its stunning Grenache.

This is the top red wine in the Bondar range for a reason. As with all of the best modern styles of Grenache coming out of McLaren Vale, the emphasis here is squarely placed on making a fresh, aromatic yet powerful style of wine that tells the story of vintage through the lens of this noble grape.

With only 310 dozen in existence of wine, you'll have to be quick if you want to find out what he's talking about. Drink some now, keep some for later, we have a feeling this will be something pretty special in a few years time. Another win for the Bondars and for all lovers McLaren Vale Grenache lovers!

About Bondar

Bondar is the baby of husband-and-wife team Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly, and winners of the 2017 Australian Wine Companion’s Best New Winery.

They have purchased the famous Rayner vineyard in McLaren Vale, crafting stunning Shiraz and Grenache from here, along with beautifully pure Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. I’ll leave it to them to describe what their extremely exciting venture is all about: “Our vision has always been to make wines that create a little intrigue, that are a little different. We want to make wines that are bright, structured, mid-weight yet concentrated in flavour with a savoury element.”

Super value, tiny production and delicious to drink!

Additional Info

From The Producer

Sourced from our own Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. We have a 0.7ha block of 44 year old Grenache vines planted in sand.

We selected the lowest yielding vines and hand-picked the grapes. In 2017 the small amount of fruit was fermented in a variety of ways – one parcel was fermented in a ceramic egg and left on skins for 120 days, another parcel was fermented with 20% whole bunches, and the final parcel was fermented with whole berries. These different techniques were all done with the idea to add layers of complexity to the wine, and to build structure around that beautiful aromatic and pure Grenache fruit.

We feel that the resulting wine is a true reflection of the site, the vintage and this amazing variety - with a light appearance, but intriguing aromatics, and intensity of pure yet complex flavour. 206 dozen bottles made.

Blend : Grenache (100%)
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2027
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

DDS review

Lift and vibrancy with depth of fruit and concentration - it's a deadly combination. Light in frame but flavour and structure but packed to the back teeth with flavour and charisma. Regional Grenache notes of dried roses and cherry, peppery spice and some dried sage on the finish. Tightly wound and pulled tight across the palate by fine spiced orange tannin. You beauty. This is McLaren Vale Grenache. - Different Drop Wine Team

"Marquee McLaren Vale vineyard now in the hands of some really good people, really good winemakers. It’s a very exciting proposition. The resulting wines, so far, short as the tenure has been, have been great. Grenache on song. Whole bunch component, some long maceration for one component in a ceramic egg. Dig in. One for collectors in the know, if you get my gist.Sappy, flirty, cherry-jammy grenache with some good finesse and a svelte, silky feel. Pretty in perfume, succulent and satiny in texture, the wine offers good, sweet fruit flavour and bright and refreshing acidity. It’s a cool, restrained feel to this grenache. Elegant vibe. It’s good stuff here. Real good." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"And so the glory days of Australian grenache roll on. This is A-Grade grenache. Lifted, lively, ripe, finessed and finished to perfection. Light in a lovely way. Drink in the scent, drink in the wine. A curl of spice-shot tannin pulls the final strings. It begs the word gorgeous." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
