About The Wine

The Best's Dolcetto is something of a curio.

This is one of the original plantings by Henry Best back in the late 1860s and 1870s. It seems that this Piedmontese variety has found a very happy home in the Grampians as those old vines still produce a bright and jubilant wine all these years later.

It's floral and bouncy with a cleansing line of acidity - it's just a great food friendly wine to drink and one of the better examples of the variety here in Australia.

About Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Lifted aromas of sour cherry, liquorice strap and violets. Mid weight vibrant and crunchy red fruits with a soft savoury finish." - Best's Great Western

Halliday Wine Companion

"Vines planted in the 1870s and '71, destemmed, open-fermented, matured for 6 months in old American puncheons. Demonstrates how nimble Justin Purser is in dealing with a stable that would do the late Tommy Smith or Gaye Waterhouse proud. Should it be given a run now (my view) or in 5 years? I think the delicious red fruits will be still going in 5+ years time, but I'm not persuaded they will be better. Terrific value." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
