About The Wine

Best's Great Western is one of the country's oldest wineries, but they continue to innovate and evolve.

Their Bin 1 Shiraz is the ultimate introduction to their famous style. Not sure whether the term 'introduction' befits a previous Jimmy Watson winner, but that just goes to demonstrate the value available here.

The 20167is in great shape. Campbell Mattinson rated it 93 points, offering, "drinking it is like taking a midday stroll in Spring."

There aren't many better and more qualified Shiraz on the market than the Best's Bin 1 - class and value both high in this release.

About Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

The Wine Front

"I looked at this over three days and a) it didn’t show an inch of oxidation at any stage, and b) all it really did throughout that time was turn increasingly elegant. On the first day I consumed a glass and was surprised at how rich and ripe it seemed; I found myself apologising to my cool-climate-loving friends (they’re Victorians, you know) for serving something so fruit dominant. Of course, they looked at me non-plussed (or with ambivalence, I’m always confusing the two). When I came back the next day and then the day after what really impressed me was the finesse of the tannin, and how seamlessly it sits in the wine. This is a wine of the spotless kind, a trait we can eternally appreciate. Berries mostly, red, blue and black; a hint of florals, some garden mint, the merest suggestion of twigs. It felt glossy and polished at first but over the course it seemed to resemble Best’s shiraz more than anything; it just has that cool-but-warm flow; drinking it is like taking a midday stroll in Spring. The t-shirt I would have printed for this wine simply says: It’s not hard to be a fan." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Our Bin No 1 Shiraz is a classic, cool climate, aromatic Shiraz, made in a style that is perfumed, spicy and peppery, yet well balanced with no overt dominance of alcohol. It’s a great match with food - particularly dishes like spring lamb.

Made from our own and carefully chosen local grower vineyards, own Bin 1 is a true expression of the Great Western geographical area.

Vintage - Good winter rains in 2016 set the vineyards up for ideal spring growing conditions that saw great flowering and fruit set. The mild summer conditions and long ripening period (with some timely small rain events) ensured that the fruit matured in near perfect conditions for harvest. A vintage that has more resemblance to those of the 80s and early 90s than the vintages of this century.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
ABV : 13.5%
