Description

Benjamin Leroux is a winemaker with a keen eye for special site.

He had his eye set on this tiny premier cru site for some time before securing his own parcel. He believes it to be one of the very best 1er sites in the famed Gevrey-Chambertin sub-region. It's one of his latest ripening plots, the northern-most premier cru site on the same slope that plays home to Les Cazetiers and Combe aux Moines.

This release shows remarkable poise. Leroux included 15% whole bunch in the ferment for structure and 20% new oak for seasoning.

It's dark, brooding, yet lifted, showing the increased depth of a late-ripening site with the vibrant red fruits that are the hallmark of Leroux's 2017 reds.

Only a mere 43 bottles of this cuveé made their way to Australian shores. Our small allocation will not be available for long.

Leroux describes this vineyard as Gevrey’s equivalent to his favourite parcels in Chassagne (Tête du Clos) and Volnay (Clos de la Cave des Ducs). In spite of the fact that Les Goulots is hardly seen on wine labels, it is, to quote Leroux, “a top, top Gevrey 1er Cru”, and one that had been on his wish list for some time. One of the reasons that this terroir is not well known is because of its size. Lying just above Champeaux, it is a tiny, well-shaded vineyard with few owners. It is the northernmost 1er Cru, on the slope that includes Les Cazetiers and Combe aux Moines and it is one of Leroux’s latest parcels to ripen.

The vines here are a 50/50 mix of 20- and 43-year-old vines, and the wine was raised in 20% new oak and with approximately 15% whole bunches in the ferment. It offers tremendous finesse and vibrant energy with waves of ripe blood plums, wild forest fruits and pine freshness. The close is both striking and sappy.

93 Points - "Medium deep purple, a little bit of blackcurrant leaf, late picked but still not quite ripe, plenty of shade in this vineyard. There follows a striking energy at the back, medium concentration redcurrant and blackcurrant. The finish is persistent and attractive.” - 91-93 points, Jasper Morris (InsideBurgundy.com)

Benjamin Leroux

Burgundian native Benjamin Leroux is one of the brightest minds and winemaking talents of his generation.

Considered a winemaking prodigy from an early age, Leroux attended the Lycée Viticole in Baune at the tender age of 13. Then, at the age of just 26, he ascended to the roles of manager and winemaker in the famed cellars of Domaine Comte Armand - a remarkable vote of confidence in one so young.

In 2007 he launched his eponymous label to wide critical acclaim. His has been a meteoric rise through the ranks of Burgundy's producers. His incisive modern approach to winemaking combined with his deep knowledge and respect for tradition has seen his small, hand-crafted cuveés coveted by collectors across the world.

These wines speak eloquently of where they come from. A legend in the making, Leroux's wines are some of the most exciting in modern-day Burgundy.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
