About The Wine

Each Pinot Noir release from Bell Hill is one of the year's most anticipated. They are, simply put, among New Zealand's greatest wines.

It is a complete barrel selection of the entire vineyard. It's the wine that defines Bell Hill, showing quasi-Burgundian structure and finesse, this is a world class expression of the Pinot Noir grape that will continue to evolve in bottle for decades to come.

Rare as a sunbathing kiwi bird, collectors of fine Pinot need to put this in the cellar to drink over the next ten years.

About Bell Hill

The wines of Bell Hill hold an almost mythical status amongst collectors of New Zealand's finest and rarest wines.

Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen reject the term 'winemakers', they consider themselves 'winegrowers', seeing the creation of wine as a wholistic, all-encompassing mission. Their Bell Hill dream commenced in 1995 when they found their dream plot of land: a limestone slope in North Canterbury that would be perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with incredible structure and longevity.

Today their wines are rarely seen outside of the finest restaurants. The role-call of critical acclaim for these wines is as long as your arm. No list of New Zealand's most important wines would be complete without these beautiful creations.

From The Producer

The Bell Hill Pinot Noir is a barrel blend of the Shelf parcels, the Shelf West (Top & A), and Quarry (Rootlings). All the fruit was destemmed giving lots of whole berries. The ferments had 24 to 27 days on skins with cold pre-ferment and warm post- ferment macerations. After basket pressing, the wine went into 100% new French oak, it was racked and blended after 12 months and had 9 months in tank before bottling on the 31st of January 2019 with pH of 3.68, TA of 5.0 g/L and an alcohol of 12%. 2,576 bottles were produced.

Earthy, lifted nose, essences of herbs and berries, bright, vibrant red fruit, some coolness, with a pretty, floral lift. Savoury sous bois, mineral core, quite tightly wound, fine textural tannins, has elegance and length, unctuous fruit, very bright mobile blue fruit with a touch of blood orange and iron. Good structure with purity of fruit and fine, textural tannins with a lingering finish. .

The Real Review

"Taut, elegant, vibrant pinot noir with cherry, savoury, dried herbs, oyster-shell, violet and mixed spice flavours supported by a backbone of fine, gently drying tannins. A youthful wine with the potential to develop well with bottle age." - Bob Campbell (The Real Review)
