About The Wine

Ata Rangi sits at the summit of Pinot Noir in New Zealand as one of the most revered wines in the country.

From a family-owned vineyard on the outskirts of Martinborough township, Ata Rangi has become known for a powerful, cellar-worthy style of Pinot Noir that has been acclaimed by critics and judges around the world.

This wine was recognised as one of New Zealand's 'First Growth' in the inaugural 'Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa' awards, alongside Felton Road as judged by New Zealand's vignerons.

It's one of the finest examples of Pinot Noir to be found anywhere outside of Burgundy. It's a wine to be shared during special moments, with those you love.

About Ata Rangi

Ata Rangi vineyard was founded by Clive Paton and his sister Alison in 1980.

The aim was use the  to produce a Pinot Noir that rivals the best in the world. Today, it's fair to say, the dream has been fully realised.

The success of this small, family-owned producer is due in huge part to the formidable talents of winemaker Helen Masters. Helen was one of the key driving forces behind the vineyard's move to organic certification. Her focus on sustainability and vineyard health has seen the wines improve dramatically since her coming on board in 2003.

Ata Rangi is one of the jewels in the crown of NZ wine and one of the most respected producers of the 'New World'.

From The Producer

Only the oldest parcels of fruit are used in this, our premium Pinot Noir. The fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid-70s, makes up 40% of the blend. The result is a very complex, structured wine, beautifully perfumed in the classic Ata Rangi style. 2017 was a cooler than average vintage which is displayed in bright fruits of redcurrant, juniper and cranberry, with floral aromas of manuka flower, sandalwood, and spicy star anise. The palate is vibrant, supple and seamless due to a delicate tannin profile and fresh acidity.

2017’s cooler temperatures of the summer months brought the more delicate expression of the Martinborough Terrace to the fore, with overall growing degree days well below the normal range. Picking started two weeks later than average with ripe tannins but low sugars. This is highlighted in tension and elegance, rather than weight and power of a warmer vintage.

Critic Reviews

98Points
James Suckling

"Really pristine fruit aromas here with such pure, ripe red cherries and roses, as well as gently earthy and spicy nuances. Very fresh, precisely ripe and a pinot you can sit and just breathe in for days. The palate has a velvety layer that few others manage to find; silky at the core, succulent in the center and delivering such vibrant, red-cherry flavors in a long, pristine and fresh, red-cherry finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Nick Stock (James Suckling)

The Wine Front

"Straight off, I like this vintage. It’s kind of cool and minty, but with a rosy perfume, smoky brown spices, and something like sarsaparilla over a typical red cherry base. Tight, gently sappy, savoury and autumnal, with a distinct earthy/mineral feel, a persistent fine rasp of kitten’s tongue tannin, and a long sweet tangy orange and spice laced finish, firm stroke of tannin carrying it on. Well sophisticated. Yes." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
