About The Wine

While Grenache may be the main thrust of the Aphelion project, cameos from other oft-neglected varieties often appear.

Here Rob Mack makes his case for single varietal Mataro. Through careful and judicious winemaking, Rob has uncovered a lovely example of Mataro. Smooth, meaty and spiced - the extended time on skins lending velvety texture and great mouthfeel to the finished wine.

It received 93 points from Mike Bennie and only 150 dozen were made.

These sorts of wines don't hang around for long.

About Aphelion Wines

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, most often there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

The Wine Front

"Fleshy, deeply-flavoured, architectural red – layers of dark fruit, peppery spice, herbal character, savoury nuttiness, earthiness and riffs of sandy tannin. Has great, grand, musk and brambles perfume too. Something to really savour and go slow with. Medium weight, quietly powerful, serious mataro feel. Good gear here." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Vineyard: Sourced from three vineyards. The first is in Blewitt Springs, the climatically coolest part of the Vale. The second vineyard is a couple of kilometres south of Willunga town. The third vineyard is in the Sellicks foothills further South.

Winemaking: All three Mataro batches received different treatment in the winery. The Blewitt Springs Mataro was 50% fermented as whole clusters of grapes. The Willunga ferment was cold soaked for 4 days prior to ferment to allow non-primary ferment extraction of colour and tannin. The Sellicks portion was kept on skins post ferment for 3 months. All batches were matured in neutral French oak before blending and bottling in July 2018.

Unfined & unfiltered.

Blend : Mataro (100%)
ABV : 14.4%
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2026
Bottle Size : 750ml
Production : 150 dozen
