About The Wine

The 2018 Young Gun of Wine, Rob Mack, is on a serious hot streak at the moment. His ethereal expressions of  Rhone varieties from McLaren Vale are making plenty of people sit up and take notice.

Here Rob walks the tightrope of fruit weight, freshness and balance, with Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz all playing their part in this excellent modern example of a classic blend.

With not a hair out of place, this is a great example of Rob's finesse in the winery and on the blending bench.

Mike Bennie awarded it 94 points, an absolute steal for those seeking sleek, modern red wines from SA.

About Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, most often there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

The Wine Front

"Grenache finds easy bed fellows with mataro and shiraz here. A new-ish release from the ever-excellent Aphelion. One of the most exciting emerging producers from Aus right now, showing a deft touch with red varieties with thought and interest in the potential of single site grapes with varying winemaking overlays as the motif. Savoury edged, medium weight, edgy, lively and fresh. A superb wine that shows detail, vitality, control. It’s pretty in perfume gently sweet there and palate, rides well on glossy acidity, shows some light tannin detail. Succulent thing this. Yes thanks." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

A 40/35/25 blend of McLaren Vale Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. A blend of 4 parcels of Blewitt Springs Grenache, 3 parcels of McLaren Vale Mataro and 2 parcels of McLaren Vale Shiraz results in a wine with oodles of complexity.

Good roundness of fruit flavour on the mid palate leads to savoury finish with powdery tannin. All nine parcels that make up this wine were fermented and aged separately before blending.

The Grenache components come from 3 separate Blewitt Springs vineyards. Whole bunch, whole berry and 3 month extended macerations were used. The Mataro parcels are from 3 separate vineyards, with some whole bunch, some four day pre ferment cold soak and some 3 month extended maceration used. The two Shiraz components are from 2 separate but very close by vineyards – one higher in elevation and picked earlier, the other picked later and then kept on skins for one month. The wine was then matured for 9 months in neutral French hogsheads prior to bottling in December 2017.
