Description

Yangarra Estate are absolutely one of our very favourite producers and a winery that is making serious waves in the Australian wine industry.

Being a hero for the McLaren Vale region, Shiraz, along with Grenache, are their specialties. Peter Fraser loves working with the old Shiraz vines on the estate and has perfected his style here over the last few years. This is one of the best value Shiraz in the Vale.

It has become a beacon of value for those looking for a wine of serious quality that won't bust the bank account. The 2016 received a huge 97 points  from James Halliday, another consistently high score for this regional favourite.

If you love Shiraz, if you love McLaren Vale, if you love wine at all, you should buy this. It will delight now or in a decade's time.

VINEYARD INFORMATION
Shiraz adopts a very different form at Yangarra than the typical McLaren Vale style, and is more akin to the cooler climate styles. Our single vineyard estate has twelve individual blocks of Shiraz. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation.

REGION: Kangarilla, McLaren Vale

VINE AGE: 19 - 23 years

ELEVATION: 150-180m above sea level

SOIL TYPE: Sand and ironstone

VITICULTURALIST: Michael Lane

WINEMAKING INFORMATION
Approximately 10% whole bunches were used with 50% of the fruit remaining as whole berries. Mechanically sorted before going into open-top fermenters. Cold soaked until the onset of wild-fermentation, utilising the yeasts that naturally come in with the grapes from the vineyard. A careful regime of plunging and rack and returns. The resulting wine was kept on lees in 25% new French oak, 75% older French oak for 12 months. No fining, just filtration.

97 Points - "50% whole berries, 50% destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented, matured for 10 months in used French oak. Just another $30 McLaren Vale shiraz? Absolutely not. This is profoundly exciting, another masterpiece from Peter Fraser, Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year '16. It's not often I'm tempted to sneakily swallow half a mouthful of a wine, it's almost as if an unseen force refuses to let me actually drink a little. The wine is spicy, textured, with a rainbow of dark fruit flavours - bloody gorgeous." - Jams Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

94 Points - "That beautiful sweet fruit. That texture like silk. That perfect integration of plum-shot fruit and posh, cedar-like oak. It smells, taste and feels pure, fine-grained and terrific, every step of the way." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 Points - "Astounding to think this is the 'entry level' Yangarra Shiraz. Pete 'Midas' Fraser is all over it. Wild ferment and matured in 25% new oak, it's a plush and perfectly weighted wine. Plump, chocolate-gilt dark fruits, the palate sitting in between medium and full bodied, the generosity of concentrated plush flavour offset by tannins that have a deep grip. A fine, throaty grip, that suggests more whole bunches than just 10%. Otherwise, a little alcohol warmth, but that is about the only quibble. You could pay double the dollars and get less wine. A winner... 10/10 value." - Andrew Graham (Oz Wine Review)

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
