About The Wine

Young Angus Vinden is taking on the winemaking duties of his family business with gusto. His mission: craft interesting expressions of the Hunter Valley, make things his own way, add some bright new colours to the rich tapestry of his home region.

The Vinden Headcase Semillon comes from one of the region's most celebrated Semillon vineyards; Somerset vineyard the site of some of Andrew Thomas' and Brokenwood's most cherished Semillons.

Angus' has a little more texture and phenolic grip than your average Semillon and seriously delivers in the classic Hunter Valley 'laser beam' acidity. Classic but with a twist and perfect for those looking to check out the next generation of Hunter Valley producers.

Critic Reviews

Halliday Wine Companion

"This reminds me of youthful muscadet, a style of wine that is gaining great hipster traction in the US. Talc, oyster shell, lemon zest and a saline whiff of salt air in the mind's eye, are its pillars. This is all tangy acid pulse and gentle phenolic pull. Far from the Madding Crowd for the region, but a winning expression of old vine Hunter semillon treated with due respect." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Halliday's Wow Factor Whites 2017)

The Wine Front

"This is one of those laser-like young semillons that really stares down the future. It’s like lemon sorbet with an infusion of fennel and woodsmoke. It’s almost slatey, it’s terribly acidic, it rushes, it drives, it persists. It’s not one for now; it needs five years at least. " - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Sourced from the Howard family Somerset Vineyard planted in 1965, on sandy loam soils in Pokolbin. Hand Picked in Mid January, the wine shows the character of the old gnarled vines; concentrated citrus uit, refreshing acidity and delicate minerality. Great early drinking, however patience will be rewarded with cellaring up to 10 years.

“If you have ever met a Vinden (at least om my family), basket case prey much sums us all up, a little eccentric to say the least; and well, I guess you have to be, growing grapes in the Hunter. In the true Vinden spirit; always wanting to do things our own way, this label forms an offshoot om my parents Vinden Estate Wines. Aſter growing up on a vineyard, ‘The Vinden Basketcase’ celebrates and boles that eccentricity and individuality, sourcing fruit from some of the Hunter Valleys most admired vineyards to produce wines of unique regionality.” -Angus Vinden
