About The Wine

The Vat 9 Shiraz is one of the benchmark wines of the Hunter Valley.

A composite blend of some of the Tyrrell family's oldest and best vineyards, the Vat 9 is the wine that paints the fullest picture of the vintage.

It's aged in large format barrels (2700 litres) which gives a gentle seasoning to the fruit. However, Vat 9 is always first and foremost about fruit quality and showcasing the beauty of Hunter Valley Shiraz.

It is one of the most collected wines in the country. Something for a special occasion now or in several decades time.

About Tyrrell's

Tyrrell's is one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious family-owned wineries.

With a rich, decorated history stretching back to 1858, the Tyrrell family are custodians of some of the finest (and oldest) vineyards in the Hunter Valley, and indeed, the world.

Their top releases of Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay are highly collectable and considered by many as some of the truest regional examples of these varieties.

As the talented Chris Tyrrell takes his place in the cellar, just as four generations of Tyrrell men have before him, this family institution is set to remain one of the most important bastions of quality Australian wine for many years to come.

Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season was one that started with great promise with our wettest winter in nearly a decade. Perfect conditions for budburst and flowering were followed by an unsettled summer consisting of hot days and wild storms. Luckily these weather patterns calmed down into one of the driest February’s on record.

Vineyard

With an average vine age of 66 years, Vat 9 2016 is a blend of the 1892 8 Acres block, 1968 Contour block, and 1968 Weinkellar east block. All these blocks are dry grown and feature similar soil types, red volcanic clay over limestone, which is ideal for super premium Hunter Valley Shiraz.

Winemaker’s Notes

The individual blocks were all handpicked and the fruit was destemmed but not crushed to encourage whole berry fermentation in open top stainless steel vats. Matured in mostly newer French oak casks (2,700Lt) until blending in April 2017 and bottling one month later.

Halliday Wine Companion

"A gleaming chassis of redcurrant, satsuma plum, Chinese herb and the Hunter's signature whiff of creamy leather, are driven by cylinders of high quality French oak (2700l casks, 15 months), gentle acidity and firm tannins of a ferrous sheen, nestled as a whisper behind the fruit, but increasingly apparent as the wine expands in the glass. This tasted even better the second day, auguring for a long, bright future ahead. A mid-weighted wine of pointed precision and savour." - Ned Goodwin, MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"Here’s a ‘classic’ Vat 9, and a ‘classic’ Hunter red. In fact, it would be hard to get more ‘classic’. Has a lovely violet and vanilla perfume, a dusting of pepper and spice, dried herb, boysenberry and raspberry, a lick of fine powdery tannin, bright pippy raspberry acidity, subtle earthiness, and a pretty red fruited finish of clean length and precision. So charming. Sometimes you don’t have to try too hard to impress." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
