Sloshy, warm-hearted, dark berry meets light mocha red of easy drinking... Plenty going on. Sluggable stuff right here. BBQs ahoy.

About the Wine

For freshness and vitality in the land of Bordeaux varieties, the modern expressions of Cabernet Franc popping up all over the country really take the cake.

This lively version of the variety comes from Somos - two young winemakers and free spirits in South Australia making wines from varieties they see as underrepresented. This was picked and pressed early, matured in mostly old French oak, every decision along the winemaking path looking for immediate drinkability.

Made in a fresh and frisky style, but with a little more grunt than the 2015, after tasting this it's easy to see where the surge in popularity for Cab Franc is coming from.

About Somos

The Somos wines are the product of two enthusiastic young winemakers - one Australian and one Mexican - looking to make interesting and contemporary wines from McLaren Vale. Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting project, with the wines exported back to South & Central America as well as sold through just a handful of outlets and venues locally in Australia.

The focus is on 'alternative' varieties from sustainably managed vineyards - their Aglianicos being of particular note. Their unique wines are made with a deft touch, the resulting styles perfumed and balanced, bursting with energy and personality. Just minuscule volumes produced, but great fun to be had across the Somos range.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Sloshy, warm-hearted, dark berry meets light mocha red of easy drinking. Structure is a little lacking, but the gist of the wine is casual drinking with some spicy personality amongst slurpiness and sweetish fruit. Shows some of the green herb and pepper detail expected, indeed, the finish is relatively green but in a lip-smacking, freshening kind of way. Saline licks, liquorice and smudged tannins complete this picture. Plenty going on. Sluggable stuff right here. BBQs ahoy." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

This vineyard is planted on rich clay soils, to the west of the slate creek in Willunga. It’s a great vineyard, producing varietal Cabernet Franc with plenty of that savoury leaf that makes the variety so alluring.

100% destemmed, whole berry fermentation, pressed at dryness. A slightly more “serious” style in 2016, a small lick of oak is present from a second fill barrel in the mix of the remaining neutral oak.
