This is an attack on the fortified aristocracy.
Simon Killeen, winemaker
About The Wine
This is a wine very close to Simon Killeen's heart, and you can see the fire in his eyes when he talks about it. Simon's father and his father before produced some of the country's great fortifieds from Rutherglen. The torch has been taken up by Simon.
He wants to be make the best Vintage Fortified and he's well on his way. The 2016 Vintage Fortified is a bit of a game changer. He's fusing seven generations of fortified winemaking knowledge with traditional winemaking from the Douro to create a fresher, drier, higher alcohol style of age-worthy fortified from the Rutherglen and Glenrowan region.
This will cellar beautifully but is as good as anything we've tried as a young wine of this style. Simon wants this wine to challenge the big boys of Australian fortified wines, and if he keeps tracking like this, that's all but a certainty.
About Simão & Co.
Simon Killeen is a seventh generation winemaker born and raised in the Rutherglen region.
His father and grandfather crafted some of the country's most legendary fortified wines, now Simon is taking up the mantle under his own label, Simão & Co.
Simão (Portuguese for Simon) is a nod to his love of traditional Portuguese fortifieds and his time spent making wine in the Douro.
Simon is deeply passionate about the wine and history of North-East Victoria. With a range that spreads from Beechworth to the King Valley and out to Glenrowan, he is making it his mission to spread the word on the unique wines from his home.
