About The Wine

The Piccadilly Valley is the premier sub-region of the Adelaide Hills for producing premium Chardonnay, so that's just where Sam Scott went hunting for fruit.

He produced two Chardonnays off this block in 2016, The Denizen is the richer of the two wines and is absolutely cracking to drink.

There are few Chardonnays in The Hills that deliver the class and volume of flavour of this for the money. It's a cracking buy if you want cool-climate Chardonnay with some flesh and weight.

With 94 points from Campbell Mattinson, this is yet another top example of why Sam Scott's wines are considered some of the best value in SA.

About Scott Wines

Sam Scott has a clear vision for his Scott and La Prova labels - Italian inspired wines done with an Australian sensibility.

Utilising his retail, winemaking and viticultural experience, he has crafted a range of interesting, charming wines from select vineyards through Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek.

They are vibrant and fruit-forward but with a savoury twist and great varietal character. Value-for-money wise, the range is up there with the best in the country.

Sam is an excellent guy and a supremely talented winemaker, as James Halliday noted, “Scott is a star in the making.”

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Quite a wine. Plenty of fireworks. Ripe peach, nougat and oatmeal flavours put on a powerful display, highlights of matchstick-like funk just and only that: highlights.  This really comes at you as a wave of scent and flavour. The opposite of insipid. Excellent." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"From one of the oldest plantings in the Adelaide Hills ('83). The complex bouquet, with a hint of reductive funk chased by some winemakers in both hemispheres, and by some such as French expert Emile Paynaud (who simply treated reduction as the opposite of oxidation), knowing it could be remedied in flash with the addition of SO2. Thus Scott uses whole-bunch pressing and passive oxidation of full solids use with wild yeast in used (3-6yo) French oak for fermentation and maturation. The wine has remarkable lightness, yet packs a decidedly dangerous punch." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Chardonnay turns on for the length and breadth of the Adelaide Hills.

This wine is from the cool, elevated sub-region, Piccadilly Valley.

Hand-picked, chilled overnight and whole bunch pressed directly to one new and four old French oak barrels for wild fermentation and partial malo.

Some richness and texture from barrel fermentation and lees contact, yet a bright and racy wine.

Bottled in June 2016.
