About The Wine

Sifting through the top producers in McLaren Vale can be difficult to navigate, but if you want something lo-tech and quietly exquisite, the wines of Samuel's Gorge should be on your hit list.

Mike Bennie summed up winemaker Justin McNamee's operation like this; "There’s bits ‘n’ pieces seemingly everywhere, but within the chaos is a magnificent winemaker orchestrating through minimal intervention, some of the Vale’s most exciting wines."

McNamee believes that Grenache is the variety that most honestly conveys the season. This 2016 Grenache is a flyer. It's a power-packed wine but with the reins held tight. The high-toned aromatics of McLaren Vale set to a rugged and complex backdrop.

Made in tiny volumes and notoriously difficult to track down; wines like this are the reason why Samuel's Gorge is one of the most loved indie producers in the Vale.

About Samuel's Gorge

Samuel’s Gorge is one of McLaren Vale’s best-kept secrets. There, in his quiet neck of the woods, owner/winemaker Justin McNamee is on a mission to build “wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony.”

The Samuel's Gorge wines may be scarcely available but they are highly renowned. Shiraz and Grenache are considered his forté, but he makes stellar examples of Tempranillo, Graciano, Gamay and more.  Justin works with some of McLaren Vale's top vineyards, preferring to entrust the region's top growers to do what they do best, while he concentrates on crafting the wines together and greeting customers at his much-loved cellar door.

These are wines with a distinct personality and a rustic feel, from an adored cult SA producer.

From The Producer

Our journey with old vine Grenache continues with the 2016 vintage. Dusty tannins give the wine presence while its perfume dances from olfactory into flavour profile. Lingering aromatics of raspberry, blue cornflowers and dried tangerine are carried across the palate with silty fine-boned tannins and cleansing acidity.

The Grenache captures the rise of energy we feel in spring and autumn – the bookends of winter – as we enjoy that erupting explosion of colour onto our landscape. It’s crimson and all things red berry, the sweetness of wild flowers in a meadow just out of sight, carried to you by the wind.

As the cool weather approaches, gather your kin and hunker down with a buttery, flaky pork pithivier and a bottle of the 2016 Grenache. A wine with story: see where it takes you...

The Wine Front

"Excellent grenache. Well ripened and well handled. Redcurrant, roses, anise and cola. Cheerful and serious at once. Tannin to close. A firmness. An emphasis. It’s grenache with one nod to pinot noir, and another to nebbiolo. In the end it’s just grenache, done really well." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
