About
The Pinot Noirs we love display a delicate balance between red and dark fruits, high-toned aromatics, layered depth and verve. It’s something we hope to achieve in our Pinots and is a combination of site and sensitive winemaking.

About The Wine

Paul and Gilli Lipscombe are doing some fantastic work from their small vineyard planting in the Huon Valley.

Their 2016 Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot Noir is a masterclass in controlled power and elegance. They strive for balance in the vineyard which makes the work in the winery minimal.

The 2016 is an excellent release. A warmer season right across Tasmania, this small batch premium Pinot Noir is one of their best releases to date.

With a very strong 95 point recommendation from Campbell Mattinson, this will be one of the region's most sought-after releases of the year.

About Sailor Seeks Horse

Sailor Seeks Horse is one of the Apple Isle's most exciting new producers. It's a husband and wife team behind the scenes, Paul the viticulturalist and Gilli the winemaker.

The Lipscombes produce exquisite Pinot Noir and Chardonnay off their estate vineyard, planted by their own hands back in 2005. The wines have startling energy to them, with a pinpoint balance of fruit and savoury spice.  They are released in perilously small amounts and are never around for long.

With the small cult following the couple have garnered since starting their own label, their wines are now hunted by serious collectors who want to be in on the ground floor.

Tasmanian Pinot and Chardonnay lovers, don't miss these scintillating wines.

Picking dates are intrinsic to obtaining the energy we look for in our wines - pick too early and you lack the delicious component, pick too late and you lose the moreish part. It’s a cliché but it’s all about balance.

Our winemaking philosophy is pretty simple. Listen to the fruit and let it guide you. We soak the fruit at ambient temperature (cold in the Huon) and then let natural yeast start the fermentation process. Once the ferments are complete we taste the wine on skins until the tannin profile is right and then press to barrel. From there we inoculate for malolactic fermentation, then leave the wine unsulphured until late-spring and add sulphur dioxide. The wine is left untouched until bottling, which varies depending on how the wine looks. Stems are used as a supportive component when they are ripe and the amount varies.

The Wine Front

"Some of Tasmania’s finest. It only sees 5% whole bunches but there’s oodles of spice here. It makes such an excellent impression. Smoky and sweet at once, ripe and tangy too. It’s a savoury style but there’s far more to it than that. Tannin curls and cuts as it tightens and pulls. We call it cherry red and black and sometimes plum but it tastes more so of pinot noir. An infusion of sweet, roasted nuts. Beautiful." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"A beautiful pinot noir, as much nerve as verve, its fresh, frisky disposition supported by well-powered fruit, its sweetness of both spice and roasted nuts offset by the wine's savoury heart. In short, it smells, tastes and feels fantastic, and has the balance and structure to embrace bottle age with open arms. " - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Here’s a label on the rise. Gilli and Paul Lipscombe’s Sailor Seeks Horse continues to produce beautiful Tasmanian wines from a rehabilitated ‘renovators delight’ vineyard in the Huon Valley. This Pinot is a standout – one of those wines where you can taste the blood, sweat and tears of boutique scale wine production. There’s a detailed story about the ups and downs of this Pinot on the winery website, and it’s worth a read, if just for the honesty. There’s an awful lot of oomph here given the modest alcohol. Indeed it’s almost soupy in its ripe raspberry fruit, then pulled back by late spice and a faint vein of vanilla oak, making for a wine of ripeness and expansive flavour, but still with shape and a savoury finish. I love that combination – it makes for utterly drinkable wine, and the fruit/tannin/delicacy combination is near perfect. Very good.Best drinking: Now, but has the stuffing for several years of joy yet. 18.5/20, 94/100. 13.4%, $50. Would I buy it? I’d go a bottle easy." - Andrew Graham (Oz Wine Review)
