About The Wine

Entire volumes have been written on Steve Pannell's influence on the Australian Wine industry. His remarkable trophy room is a testament to his place in the industry.

Much of his success of the last couple of decades stems from his deep love of his home region, McLaren Vale. 'The Vale' is Steve's ode to his home. As the man says, "it is the Vale in essence, taste and character."

With old vine fruit, carefully measured amounts of oak, and co-fermentation of the two varieties this is concentrated, energetic and perfectly balanced all at once.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Steven Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"The perfumed musk and red fruits of the Grenache lift the rich black fruits and spice of the Shiraz. A complex and integrated nose, with plum, nutmeg, clove, and musk. These two varieties unite to achieve a seamless medium-bodied wine with a silky texture. The Grenache controls the mid-palate exuberance of the Shiraz and provides great length. Tightly wound, coiled and brooding. Long mouth-watering tannins." - Steve Pannell

Additional Info

From The Producer

2016 was a vintage of two distinct halves. Winter & Spring were exceptionally dry & warm, with irrigation beginning earlier than Steve can ever recall. To answer our concerns, a number of rainstorms quickly changed everything, making 2016 one of the wettest and mildest ripening periods. It is rare to harvest in McLaren Vale with green lush mid rows in the vineyard. These cool, wet conditions saved our vines. The interesting thing about all the 2016 reds is their huge, profound tannins most similar to 1996, where the early heat toughened up the skins.

2016 S.C. Pannell The Vale comprises 70% Grenache (74-year-old vines on the Old McDonald site in McLaren Vale) and 30% Shiraz (from Steve's Koomilya site in McLaren Vale. The Grenache spent 13 days on skins while the Shiraz spent 16 days. Blended in February 2017 and bottled on 26th June 2017. The Grenache was aged in a 5000L French vat and the Shiraz in 4+ year old French puncheons before being blended back to vats and settled for 4 months before bottling.

Blend : Grenache (70%), Shiraz (30%)
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2030
Bottle Size : 750ml
