About The Wine

Bryan Martin's Estate vineyard in Murrumbateman has Sangiovese vines on it that go back 20 years. He has been refining his approach to this wine for many years now and has seemed to find a more traditional method of production as the best course of action.

This is the first year that his home-grown fruit has gone into huge 2800L foudre for 22 months ageing. As Bryan explains, "A timeless method for this variety that allows it to progress slowly without gathering layers of oak."

The proof is in the pudding and it is clear that this is one of the more impressive Sangioveses in the country. Firm and gravelly with beautiful Autumnal aromatics, this is Sangiovese with a refined Australian accent.

About Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is a winemaker at the height of his powers. Setting aside the exceptional work he is doing behind the scenes at regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, his Ravensworth wines have become some of the Canberra region’s hottest releases.

Bryan’s winemaking style is equal parts science and artistic flair. He’s an adventurous spirit trapped in the body of a technical virtuoso. A concert pianist jamming to free jazz. It’s a killer combination.

His range is full of alternative varieties and whacky blends, with texture and balance the key in everything. Truly unique wines from a region on the up and up and some of Canberra’s most sort after wines.

"If you could peg Bryan Martin down for his metier, it’s pretty easy to suggest that the halo varieties of Canberra District of riesling and shiraz are in the crosshairs, but the wild card would be sangiovese, I feel. Few in the country hold a candle to his comfort and class with the variety. Great colour, was the first comment out of my mouth. Pale garnet with bronze edge. Lovely. Very savoury perfume hit with cherry juice and pomegranate. Shows clove and white pepper. Palate has this transparent wash of sour cherry fruit and a sheath of very fine, firm, chewy tannins. Ethereal but tightly wound. Very lovely feel here, a very good wine indeed." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"The second release of the estate and what a wine for its beauty, focus and definition. While it has Bryan Martin's lightness of touch, it's a pure expression of the variety and site. Heady aromatics with red cherries and pips, cinnamon with a sprinkling of basil that follow through on the medium-bodied palate. There's considerable depth of flavour but it's not an overwhelming wine with its ribbons of tannin and bright acidity holding everything in place." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
