About the Wine

Mayford only produce three wines; Chardonnay, Shiraz, and one of the country's best Tempranillo.

Everything is grown on their own estate. From the vine to the bottle, this couple does it all themselves. Small batches of wine with only quality in mind.

Their Chardonnay is for those who like a more voluptuous style of Chardonnay. There is a lot of wine here. Careful fruit selection and meticulous winemaking converging from Eleana Anderson. It makes for cracking wine with inherent balance and great flavour.

The 2016 received 95 points from James Halliday and will satisfy those who look for Chardonnay with weight and presence.

About Mayford

Mayford has been a work in progress since 1995, now they are one of the leading producers in the Alpine Valley. Setting the bar high, are Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson. Very high indeed.

They only produce four wines from their bucolic estate; Chardonnay, Shiraz, one of the country’s best Tempranillo and a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet which shows immense promise.

Bryan tends the vines, Eleana makes the wines. From the vine to the bottle, this couple do it all themselves. Small batches of wine with only quality in mind.

A jewel in the crown for the Alpine Valleys and Porepunkah region.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Vintage

A major hail event in late November together with warm, dry conditions over the ripening season in 2016 resulted in tiny volumes of Mayford Chardonnay.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Fermented with naturally occurring yeasts in French oak barriques (20% new). Partial malolactic fermentation was encouraged to build more generous and complex structure, and lees stirring for freshness and a creamy, curd texture. Total barrel maturation time was twelve months.

Tasting Note

It is a more opulent style of Chardonnay, delicious for drinking young. Ripe stone fruit, lemon curd, crème brulée and hazelnut notes lead in to a soft, balanced and textural palate. This is in particularly short supply.

Blend : Chardonnay (100%)
ABV : 13%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2023
Bottle Size : 750ml

The Wine Front

“The growing season for the 2016 vintage was marked by a devastating hail storm, which made life difficult to say the least. Mayford was one of the wineries to cop the brunt of it. Rescue grapes were brought in as a result but this chardonnay is made from estate-grown fruit. It’s a ripe, peach-driven, juicy expression of the variety with sweet spice and sweet oak characters nibbling gently about the edges. There’s an attractive oatmeal character here too, roasted, adding to the effect of sweet-savouriness. This wine seems to be getting more and more elegant with each release but flavour by no means has been left behind. I wouldn’t say this is a peak release but it works well; the pleasure is certainly there.“ - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"If there is a heavier Burgundy-shaped bottle, I haven't encountered it, and have no wish to do so. Happily for those who have lugged a 6-bottle case into their cellar, the wine is full of character. If they've picked up 12 bottles they are either Olympic weightlifters or in hospital after cardiac arrest. The wine has a ramrod-straight link through the length of the palate, and will only soften slowly as it ages. It will be worth the weight and the wait." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
