About the Wine

Sam Scott's prowess with Italian varieties naturally extends to Nero d'Avola. He gets the balance of sweet and savoury just right in this 2016 release from the Barossa Valley.

As a wine designed for his own enjoyment, Sam has got this one just right. "This is exactly the style of wine I like to drink with easygoing red sauced pasta and pizza." he says. Campbell Mattinson agreed giving it 92 points and noting that "it has drinkability written all over it."

Another winning release for this reliably excellent value producer in the Adelaide Hills.

About Scott & La Prova Wines

Sam Scott has a clear vision for his Scott and La Prova labels - Italian inspired wines done with an Australian sensibility.

Utilising his retail, winemaking and viticultural experience, he has crafted a range of interesting, charming wines from select vineyards through Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek.

They are vibrant and fruit-forward but with a savoury twist and great varietal character. Value-for-money wise, the range is up there with the best in the country.

Sam is an excellent guy and a supremely talented winemaker, as James Halliday noted, “Scott is a star in the making.”

From The Producer

Viticulture

Nero d’Avola, the black grape native to Sicily, has been grafted onto 25+ year old vines, in a small vineyard in Penrice, northern Barossa Valley. Deep cracking Biscay soil and northern Barossa’s heat is just made for Nero d’Avola. It doesn’t like too much water, so 2016 was a great year for this wine in particular.

Winemaking

One small batch, in an open fermenter of de-stemmed fruit, where after about 12 days I pressed half of the ferment to old oak for a vibrant and fruitful portion, and left the remainder on skins for another 8 months (drained it off in November) to create a textural, silky and ethereal component.

The synergy when blended together makes for a delicious drink, with a simple rusticity and core of supple yet vibrant fruit. This is exactly the style of wine I like to drink with easygoing red sauced pasta and pizza. Bottled February 2017.

The Wine Front

"Juicy, ripe, fruit-filled and fabulous to drink. Little more need be said. Red and black berries, liquorice, flings of spice and a lift of peppercorn. It fills the mouth with succulent flavour; it’s blessed with floral perfumes; it has drinkability written all over it." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
