About The Wine

The Entity is John Duval's attempt to craft more elegant rendition of Barossa Shiraz that stays true to regional expression.

The fruit is selected from great old vineyards across a variety of the Barossa's sub-regions, Duval looking for balance and a more controlled version of Shiraz from the region - something he became famous for during his days as Head Winemaker for Penfolds.

The 2016 looks in very good form. With 97 points from James Halliday and 95 points from Campbell Mattinson, this is the sort of wine that forms the cornerstone of a cellar.

A classic wine that you can bank on for a minimum of a decade given the right conditions.

About John Duval

John Duval is an International winemaking legend, and one of our country's vino superstars.

For 29 years he was a winemaker (16 years as chief) at the little-known Barossa winery Penfolds, and was responsible during that time for putting together the reasonably drinkable wine we call 'Grange'.

For the last decade, Duval has spent his time traversing the globe, making high-quality wines in Europe, the North-West of the USA and even Chile. But his love remains the Barossa Valley, with his private label wines representing a chance to try some stunning wines at very reasonable prices.

Now with his own label in full-flight, John's legacy as one of the Barossa Valley's finest winemakers of his generation continues to unfold.

Critic Reviews

97Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"60% Barossa Valley, 40% Eden Valley grapes, open-fermented with submerged cap, matured for 15 months in new (33%) and used French hogsheads. Deeply coloured; this is at once full-bodied and elegant, not a common marriage with young red wines with decades in front of them. The flavours are all black: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, earth and licorice. The old vines have also provided ripe tannins, the whole theme resonated with oak a la Grange." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

95Points
The Wine Front

"Svelte, sturdy, plump, you name it. There’s ample tannin here but the fruit sweeps through it. This is a ripping Barossa/Eden shiraz. As generous as it is refined; as neat as it is ribald. Blackberry, roasted plums, cloves, mint, dark chocolate and a rush of boysenberry. Both grunty and succulent. It’s a beauty." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

From The Producer

My aim with Entity is to produce an elegant Shiraz true to the Barossa. The 2016 Entity again includes some 40% Eden Valley Shiraz to help maintain the elegance and style of Entity.

Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques were employed with Entity, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow great potential for improvement in the bottle under good cellaring conditions, for at least 10-12 years.
