About the Wine

McLaren Vale 'GSM' blends work so very well, and this wine from the good people at Jericho is a contemporary, joyous celebration of the style.

The fruit comes from 40-year-old, unirrigated bush vines in the Blewitt Springs area - a sub-region that is home to many of the Vale's finest and most perfumed Grenache. Owner and winemaker Neil Jericho explained to us that while the Shiraz (10%) and Mataro (3%) components definitely add something to this wine, the hero is Grenache (87%). Juicy, jubey, delicious Grenache!

Campbell Mattinson labelled it "Pitch perfect GSM" in his 93 point review and we agree - cracking little wine at a bloody excellent price.

About Jericho

Jericho is one of the most exciting emerging producers in South Australia, consistently churning out delicious, characterful and brilliantly priced wines in all styles.

Family owned and run with experienced winemaker Neil Jericho at the helm, they source both traditional and alternative varieties from various vineyards around McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Neil sums up the Jericho philosophy: “in every wine I like to see varietal flavour and character. I don’t want to overpower the fruit with oak. It’s got to be in balance, with nothing sticking out. They’ve got to be drinkable!”

Modern, creative and smashable wines and across the range, amazing value.

Winemakers Notes

The focus of this wine is the Grenache with the other varieties adding structure and complexity to the overall blend. Grenache, 87%, had partial whole bunch fermentation and aged in older french oak barrels. Whole bunch fermentation gives the wine its vibrant red berry characteristics. Careful use of Shiraz, 10%, adds structure to the wine and the Mourvedre, 3%, adds spiciness. Grenache is one of the traditional varieties of McLaren Vale so it is with great pride that we now add this blend to the Jericho portfolio.

Vineyards

The Grenache fruit comes from two very old McLaren Vale vineyards that are 85 and 40 year old vines. The vines are old bush vines and have never been irrigated in their time. This produces intensity in the Grenache portion of the wine. Shiraz and the Mourvedre fruit are typical McLaren Vale, strong and fruit driven.

Food Pairing

This wine is a great food wine and is perfectly paired to a wide range of foods. From pizza, pasta and tapas through to stronger flavoured dishes, BBQ meats and game. Cellaring Best to drink young while the flavours are fresh and juicy. 3-5 years.

The Wine Front

"GSM blend from the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. 86/11/3 distribution between grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre. The Grenache is grown on 40-year-old vines. “We are careful not to use too much shiraz in the blend to ensure the features of grenache are retained.” Smart. In excellent form. The mix of fruit sweetness, savouriness and spiciness is exemplary. Boysenberry, black cherry and sweet raspberry flavours blend seamlessly with dry spice, earth and peppers. Oak flavour plays no obvious role. Floral notes though add a prettiness. Pitch perfect GSM." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"An 86/11/3% blend, the grenache from 40yo dry grown bushvines, and the restriction of the shiraz component to 11% was exactly correct. This has excellent colour, a red blossom and spice bouquet, and a quietly spoken but pure evocation of grenache. So easy to drink now or in a decade or more." - James Halliday (Australain Wine Companion)
