2016 Izway Angelo Aglianico

Barossa Valley, SA

One of the most impressive versions of this Italian variety produced anyway in Australia.

About The Wine

On the shortlist of Australia's best Aglianico, Angelo sits somewhere near the top.

The 2016 is the finest release of Angelo to date from Craig and Brian. The vines planted by the Kalleske family in Koonunga at the behest of the Izway lads are now hitting their straps. This is a powerhouse version of the variety, one good for a couple of decades in the cellar without breaking a sweat.

It combines the smooth, swanky fruit of the Barossa Valley with the ripped, rugged tannin the variety shows in its home of Basilicata, in central-southern Italy.

If you love Italian varieties with an Australian accent, this is going to knock your socks off.

About Izway

The Izway wines are a partnership between Brian Conway and Craig Isbel.

These two Barossa Valley diehards have been making outstanding Barossa red wines from great vineyards since 2003. They honour their families in the naming of each wine, characters like Bruce, Harold and Don populating the range.

These are quintessential Barossa Valley wines - deep, dark and brooding, powerful and polished. With one nod towards tradition and one towards the future, Barossa Valley lovers should be all over these wines.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"A slightly reductive initial nose of gruyere and blue cheese, disrobes with air to reveal pretty, floral aromatics. Lavender and tar and dark violet crumble, combine with licks of liquorice and cardamom. Powerful, robust, dry, powdery tannin, juicy and fresh mid pallet. Fine, linear profile with a gutsy finish." - Izway Wines

Additional Info

From The Producer

Over the years we have been on the hunt for another red varietal that could match the quality of Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz in the Barossa Valley.

We decided Aglianico from Basilicata, Italy would work well and so we approached John, Barb and Andy Kalleske to plant some in their Koonunga vineyard. Bottled after 12 months in seasoned French oak, the wine is unashamedly Barossan – but in the mid palate and finish there is a little Italian edge.

Still quite primary on the nose with spice, red fruits and leather, the palate has lovely dark cherry and plum, and finishes long with really clean acidity, lovely drying tannins and a savoury lick.
