A wine with a beating heart, and a throbbing pulse. Exemplary. It will age beautifully too.

About the Wine

The Old Vine Grenache is one of Alex's specialities. With the 2016 release, Alex has hit paydirt.

The fruit from this 101-year-old vineyard gets full opportunity to show its true character. An extraordinary wine for its price. It shows a rare restraint in the use of oak. It's all about the fruit, and with fruit this beautiful, by Jove, it should be!

In one of his highest rating reviews of the year for a Grenache, Gary Walsh called the 2016 "A wine with a beating heart, and a throbbing pulse. Exemplary. It will age beautifully too." in his 95 point review.

An excellent modern example of Australia's world-class Grenache capabilities. The praise more than justified with this excellent release.

About Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country. With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.  These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

“Fabulous wine. It’s savoury and insistently tannic, not sweet, but full of juicy raspberry fruit. There’s a rose and spearmint perfume, peanuts and spice, medium bodied appeal, a sweep of shale-like tannin, subdued power, and a red fruited finish that cascades down the throat. A wine with a beating heart, and a throbbing pulse. Exemplary. It will age beautifully too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"From the same vineyard source as Ancestor Vine, but no new oak. 5% mataro inclusion; 20% whole-bunches, wild yeast, plunged daily for 2 weeks, 17 months in seasoned 600l barrels. A glorious grenache that effortlessly stays in the savoury spectrum without losing its heart of excellent raspberry-red-plum. Heady aromatics of Middle Eastern spices especially sumac, plus Sichuan pepper, rose hips and warm earth; pristine flavours sashay across the medium-bodied palate, taking the spongy tannins and talc-like acidity all in its stride." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Additional Info

From the Producer

Luckily, I have access to very small parcels of fruit from old, dry-grown, hand-pruned/picked vineyards. I decided that making a Grenache the way Barossan families made table wines many generations ago would honour the years of back-breaking work required for keeping the vineyards feasible and sustainable. The 'Old Vine' is from the best performing Barossa Valley Grenache vineyard each year.
