There is a powerful minerality that runs through this wine, perhaps due to the fact it is the highest altitude vineyard on the Western side of the Barossa.

Alex Head

About the Wine

Alex Head is one of the Barossa's brightest young stars. He is, what you might call, a natural talent. With no formal winemaking training, the precision and skill with which he crafts his wines is quite incredible.

Arguably, the two wines in his portfolio that have gained him the most notoriety would be twin Shiraz; The Blonde and The Brunette. The Brunette is the slightly brawnier and more rustic of the two, a wine with intensity and power in spades.

This is one of the benchmarks for the next generation of Barossa Shiraz. This single vineyard in Moppa producing one of the future icon wines of the region. Collectors, get on board.

The 2016 is a blistering release of Brunette, with 95 points from Gary Walsh and the potential to be something truly wonderful in 10-20 years time.

About Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country. With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.  These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

From the Producer

When I came across this vineyard it was in really bad condition.  I knew it had great potential because technically it had all the things I had been looking for.  Even though; ravaged by kangaroos, rabbits and without any water, in its first year - I produced a wonderful wine.  There is a powerful minerality that runs through this wine, perhaps due to the fact it is the highest altitude vineyard on the Western side of the Barossa at approximately 340-380m.

The soils include deep red clays and large ironstone rocks (Brunette in colour). This vineyard even attains a level of lignification in the stems allowing for partial whole bunch fermentation.  The alcohol is always at around 13.5% and these unique characters allow me the opportunity to take this wine to a level comparable with the great Syrah wines of the world.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
ABV : 14.5

Critic Reviews

95Points
The Wine Front

"Earthy, coffee grounds, dark spices, black fruit, dried mint, a touch of tar. Full bodied, dense well-packed, almost silty tannin, richness and spice, almost sticky feel in the mouth – like slow-cooked ribs – dark spice theme continues, drying and firm on a long finish. Savoury. Deep. Throbbing. It’s excellent." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

97Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"From Moppa Hill, on the highest part of the Western Ridge of the Barossa, with an easterly aspect so it only captures morning sun. Rich and deep, with an abundance of flavours, yet never dipping into overripe territory. Perfect balance in every respect, the vortex of fruit, spice and integrated oak leading onto the full-bodied palate, greeted by velvety tannins and an overwhelming desire for another glass." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Are there volume discounts?

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll match it. We'll even retrospectively refund you if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me?

This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store?

No, not really. More of a warehouse/office. We do however offer a Click & Collect option from our warehouse in Ultimo, Sydney. Our warehouse address for Click & Collect is: F5A, 42 Wattle St, Ultimo, 2007

Can I special order a wine you do not sell?

If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
