About

About The Wine

Mascarello are now the full owners of the celebrated Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falleto, and what a monopole to own...

Monprivato is the grand cru burgundy of Barolo, needing to age and evolve, perhaps even more so with the great 2016 vintage.

But patience can be reward with complex, ethereal and elegant mature wines, that often show mulchy, truffly characters alongside the purest of red fruit profiles.

We're privileged to have some bottles available. Whoever buys one, can we come round for dinner?

About Guiseppe Mascarello

Mascarello is simply one of the great Barolo estates, inextricably linked to the famous Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falleto, one of the best single sites in the world of wine.

Founder Guiseppe Mascarello managed vineyards for others in the mid 1800s, eventually buying land for himself in Monforte d'Alba. His son Maurizio took the venture to Monprivato in Castiglione Falleto in 1904, and set up the current winery in nearby Monchiero in 1921.

His descendent Mauro is now the owner, making very traditional, very long-lived Barolo from the best crus in the region. They are also very rare, so buy them if you see them...

Additional Info

From The Producer

The Monprivato vineyard lies on soil originating from the Helvetian era of the Miocene epoch in the Tertiary period. it is composed of clayey-silty marl, with good structure, a high content of active limestone, and a well-proportioned supply of micro-elements. Together with the vineyard’s south-westerly exposure at midday, these elements provide the Barolo wine with excellent body, a subtle bouquet, delicate tar, a lingering aftertaste, an unmistakable clear elegance, and the ability to evolve in a very positive way over time whilst maintaining extraordinary youth and freshness.

The Monprivato cru is only bottled – with a numbered label – in outstanding and excellent vintages. Any vintages which are not adjudged to be up to this extremely high quality standard become part of the normal Barolo, while others are sold as Nebbiolo Langhe.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Floral, spicy, Ovaltine and roses, cherry, strawberry and mint. Firm, very firm indeed, with crushed rock tannin lending a slightly gritty profile to the wine, baked strawberry and malty flavours, but still retains some mouth-perfume of sandalwood and tight acidity. Quite ripe, but still mainly into red fruits, with a slightly milky and malty finish of rugged tannin grip and excellent length. It’ll need quite a few years to unwind, and roll out." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"Medium to full ruby to brick-red colour with a slight tinge of purple lingering. The bouquet is richly complex and powerful, the palate also very intense and powerful, with good concentration but without 'bigness' or heaviness. It's very focused and penetrating, the flavours tremendously complex and fascinating, recalling dried herbs of many kinds, dark berry fruits buried deep. Bitter balsamic herbs melded with maraschino cherry and preserved plums, dried mixed peels, too. The tannins are finely sculpted yet firmly persuasive. The overall impression is of great elegance, persistence and extremely detailed, multi-faceted character." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
