About The Wine

Barnaby Flanders knows good Pinot Noir. He has developed an impressive reputation for producing top quality Pinots from Mornington and despite the challenges of the 2016 season, this is another impressive release from Garagiste.

The Merricks Pinot has the highest profile of Barney's single vineyard range, and it is typically the first to sell out. It’s full bodied for a Mornington Pinot with complexity and structure at the forefront, but the warmer vintage conditions have provided plenty of ripe juicy Pinot fruit at the same time.

Campbell Mattinson described Garagiste as a "gem of a producer" in his review of this wine, and if you want high-quality Mornington Pinot then look no further. A ripper.

About Garagiste

Garagiste is the brainchild of Barnaby Flanders.

After leaving Allies Wines in 2003 he embarked on a mission to produce small batch premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under his own label in his beloved Mornington Peninsula.

Barney loves the sub-regionality to be exploited in Mornington Peninsula, the slight alterations in aspect and soil profile within this small wine producing region provide him with the scaffolding around which he builds his stunning harem of small batch wines.

They are only ever made in small quantities so time is of the essence if you want to explore the world of Garagiste.

From The Producer

Sourced from the 20-year-old Merricks Grove vineyard and its grey sandy loam marbled with red ironstone.

Up here, the altitude and coastal breezes seem to compress the wine's fruit leaving a super-refreshing coiled mouth feel, though the soils gift a more airy-aromatic Pinot compared to Garagiste's corresponding wine from Balnarring. Picked on 1st March.

The grapes are hand sorted twice, in the vineyard, and again in the winery on a sorting table; slowly destemmed by gravity, into small open fermenters. Fermented with wild yeast (total time on skins is 23 days). Gentle cap management, predominantly with light pump overs and a few plunges. Matured in 300-litre hogsheads (20% new François Frères), the wine is matured on lees for 10 months before bottling.

Bottled unfiltered.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)
ABV : 13.50%
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2026

The Wine Front

"Garagiste is a gem of a producer. It’s smoky and stern, herbal too, but it has both the fruit and the pinky musk-like notes to carry the day. Indeed the complexity on offer here, for such a young wine, is notable. Chicory, undergrowth, black cherry, orange rind and toast-like notes weave their way through the palate. It’s not in any way sweet but nor is it bitter or unripe. I don’t have winemaking specs but it feels as though there’s a whole bunch element – in its twiggy/undergrowthy characters, its mouthfeel and indeed its tannin – though it could be the year and the vineyard rather than the process. No matter. It’s a wine with plenty going on; a wine which should mature well in the medium term, if not longer. It needs a little more time for the flesh to find its feet but it’s getting there. Quality oak here adds a seductive element." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

If your order is placed before 12pm we’ll get it on the truck that day. Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
