About The Wine

The 'Coste di Rose' is Giuseppe Vaira's secret weapon.

Perched between two of Barolo's greatest vineyards, Cannubi & Bussia, Coste di Rose produces the kind of Barolo that will make you blush. It's the more ethereal, seductive side of Nebbiolo on show here, rather than one of out and out power. The unique soils on this site are dominated by a Tortonian sandstone that is known for imparting a distinctive rosy perfume and softer, moreish tannin.

Vaira says this is the most approachable of his Crus, though for the paitent, there will be plenty of rewards should you cellar it for a decade or more.

About G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra is a small, artisanal family producer and one of the benchmark modern day producers in Barolo.

The wines are now made by the family's second generation, with Giuseppe in the winemaking driver's seat supported by his siblings; Isidoro and Francesca under the watchful eye of father and founder Aldo and their mother Milena.

These are stunning examples of the regional staple varieties, made with one eye on tradition and one on progression. With holdings in the commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga, they cover some of the most sought-after terroir in the region and make the most of it.

As noted wine writer Antonio Galloni once wrote, theirs is “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”.

Additional Info

From The Producer

The Vaira family's parcel in Coste di Rose in Barolo are gorgeously located on the top of the MGA, at 310m above sea level. It's a unique vineyard. The soil is dominated by a pure Arenaria di Diano, a Tortonian sandstone that delivers distinctive floral aromatics and a salty minerality. This cru is one of Barolo’s best-kept secrets, being located right in between Cannubi and Bussia, yet away from the beaten paths.

Fruit is picked usually around the third week of October. Vinification occurs in custom-designed vertical tini, with gentle punch down and rinsing of the cap. Maceration lasts 40 to 50 days on average. Malolactic conversion takes place in stainless steel, the following spring.

Coste di Rose is possibly the most approachable cru of Barolo at this stage, with roses and a floral-dominated nose, combined with marasca cherry and hints of liquorice and mint. A very elegant and pleasurable structure that flows gracefully on the palate with a lingering and sapid finish. - Giuseppe Vaira

Critic Reviews

95Points
The Wine Front

"Such a seductive wine. Cherry, dark raspberry, dried roses, baking spices, liquorice and something a bit like Earl Grey tea. Medium-bodied, tannin that manages to be sweet and supple, yet dense and firm, a cool menthol note, with exotic spice and floral perfume, freshness and excellent length, all that delicious tea-like tannin pushing it out. Beautiful." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

James Suckling

"This has some very attractive rose perfume and anise spice with raspberry, redcurrant and red-cherry aromas. Blueberry pastry, too. So perfumed. The palate has very fine, almost crystalline tannins and such intense, juicy and vivaciously delivered flavors of essence-like red fruit. So precise. Drinkable now, but with potential for long-term cellaring." - Nick Stock (JamesSuckling.com)
