If you've loved Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier in the past, you'll be smitten with the 2016 release. It's a great wine at full stride. It's something truly beautiful for Australian wine to be proud of.

About Clonakilla

Clonakilla is one of the true icons of the Australian wine scene. Since its inception, it has been one of (if not THE) leading lights of the Australian cool climate wine insurgence. They boast one of the most collectable wines in the country with their Shiraz Viognier and whether Shiraz, Riesling or otherwise, are considered the benchmark for all things Canberra. Quite simply, one of the true gems in the Australian Wine Industry crown.

About Canberra

Canberra is a sleeping giant of Australian wine. The ability of this region to produce world class wines in only a relatively short history is almost second to none in the whole country. With the ability to produce everything from perfumed and tightly wound Syrah, to razor sharp Riesling and a wide array of emerging varieties and techniques, Canberra will be one of the ‘must watch’ wine producing regions in Australia for many years to come.

Critic Reviews

98Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"The perfumed, spicy bouquet of red flowers and fruits doesn’t prepare you for the intensity and piercing length of its beautifully balanced medium-bodied palate. This is a truly glorious wine that draws you back again and again to explore the wealth of red fruit flavours and the majesty of its textures and flavours. Tasted over two days, revealing ever more beauty." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

97Points
Wine Business Monthly

"This is a shiraz viognier of the highest order, with desperate purity of white pepper, whole bunch mixed spice and plum skin, and a super fine, gravelly tannin structure of breathtaking presence yet unerring finesse. In enduring line, undeviating persistence and sheer, glorious beauty, this vintage sits confidently among the greatest syrahs on earth." - Tyson Stelzer (WBM)

The Wine Front

"This wine is light on its feet, perfumed, exotic, marshalled with fruit and spice, and tannic. It doesn’t wallop you upfront; it saves itself for the finish. It’s not an impetuous wine. There are candied notes here, dry spices, woody anise, a whisper of peppercorn. I would almost describe this wine as crisp, such is its lack of gloop, its finesse, its cleansing run of flavour-infused acidity. This release will age magnificently." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96Points
Nick Stock

"The detailed layering in this wine is superb, as is the measured expression of exuberant fruit. Aromas of baking spices, pepper and bright red berry and cherry fruits make for enticing youthful appeal. The palate has an incredibly silky and elegant appeal. Bright red cherry and plum fruits." - Nick Stock

Additional Info

From the Producer

The 2016 vintage was generous and early. Late summer temperatures were consistently warmer than average and a larger than average crop proved to be a double blessing, slowing the ripening, which would have otherwise raced ahead, and filling the fermenters in our newly expanded winery with some of the most opulent, spice laden, dark berry fruit we have seen. A powerful vintage with great cellaring potential.
