About
Jim Chatto and his home vineyard down in the Deep South of Tasmania are killing it right now. The wines being grown on this vineyard are remarkable. A long and storied history looks likely; we’re getting in on the ground floor.

About the Wine

Jim Chatto is one of Australia's most highly regarded living winemakers. Some of his recent releases may well come to be seen as some of the best wines of his generation. His winemaking ethos is simple and site driven: the very model of modern Australian wine.

The Chatto wines are the culmination of Jim's long-term love affair with Tasmanian Pinot Noir. It took him six years to find the perfect site and the long search has definitely paid off.

The 2016 release of the Chatto Pinot Noir is gorgeous. Built around complex layers of reduction, power and fruit purity, Jim says the 2016 releases are his finest to date.

With 97 points from James Halliday, this release has been under high demand by collectors with an eye for quality. Only tiny amounts are available. Lovers of the finest Pinot Noir should not hesitate.

About Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia. His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasent in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land on the Apple Isle that Jim describes as “right on the edge of viticultural possibility”, planting began in 2007. In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary Pinot Noir and looks set to become one of Tasmania's most prized viticultural assets.

Halliday Wine Companion

"The bouquet is still locked up, the palate anything but: intensely and immediately expressive, dark cherry/berry fruits held in an embrace of fine but persistent tannins and an airbrush of French oak. Its balance and length guarantee a long future, with spices bursting through." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

“Jim Chatto and his home vineyard down in the Deep South of Tasmania are killing it right now. The wines being grown on this vineyard are remarkable. A long and storied history looks likely; we’re getting in on the ground floor. This adds a chalkiness to the foresty fruit, the warm spice, the florals here peppered with scrunched dry leaves. It matches presence to persistence; it places every step as firmly as it does carefully. Time will bring yet greater charm.“ - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From the Producer

Stylistically we are looking to make a focused yet elegant wine of purity and balance that is true to the site, with the fruit spectrum right on the cusp of red and black (perhaps leaning to the red). Thus, still holding its natural acidity, vibrancy and line. Stalks are a component; though well embedded into the wine. Our crops are low (~1 kg/vine) so we are reaching this flavour profile at modest sugar levels: between 12.5-13.5 Be
