PJ Charteris' love for Riesling stretches back to his time with Tim Knappstein in the early 1990s.

He's found a gem in The Hunt Vineyard. The fruit that comes of this block is ridiculously intense. Picking dates and how much residual sugar to maintain in the wine are critical to finding balance with the finish wine.

Every year PJ plays with this fruit, the balance is more finessed.

With a searing intensity yet a juiciness that keeps you coming back to the glass, this is a cracking Riesling that you can enjoy just as much now as in 15 years time.

About Charteris

PJ Charteris is an experienced winemaker and one of the country's top Wine Show Judges.

A Kiwi native, PJ has spent much of his professional career working in the Australian wine industry. He spent time at Penfolds and Lindemans before being appointed Chief Winemaker at Hunter Valley icon Brokenwood, where he stayed for twelve years.

Charteris is PJ returning to his NZ roots. It's his chance to put forth his own spin on the Central Otago region.

With his local connections, PJ has managed to secure a suite of excellent vineyards to source his fruit from. Since the brand's conception in 2008, his wines have received high critical acclaim.

From The Producer

While the earth mother, Papatuanuku and the sky father, Ranginui work as hard as they can to influence the wines we enjoy, the final expression of what we see in the glass is nothing without human interference.

A particular harvest is often marked in a winemaker’s memory by happenstance as much as it is by the vintage conditions. Opinion altering wines shared over a harvest lunch, visits from out of season winemaking peers or late night over consumption and conversation can have butterfly effect like changes on the final outcome of harvest. After the picking decision, the moment I arrest the fermentation is the most critical stage in the development of this wine.

So, it was kind of serendipitous to have an old mate Tim Wardell with me to make the call. Tim is an Omarama boy, grew up a shepherd on a high-country sheep station. I’m not sure what possessed him to turn to winemaking, but it meant we crossed paths studying all thing vinous at Roseworthy in South Australia. We played Rugby and drank a bit of stout together (he is a tough bugger) but it was under the guidance of the Clare Valley legend Tim Kappstein in the early 90’s that we learnt about Riesling.

With that sort of human terrior on hand it only seemed appropriate to interfere with the course of nature. Our earliest harvest of this wine to date and while I see no shortcomings, the ever earlier picking dates across all varieties and vineyards are both a blessing and a concern. For every agriculturalist the climate changes are clearly evident and we are all dealing with the uncertainty of different climatic circumstances year on year.

"Subtle floral perfume, more citrus blossom, and the almost tactile smell of windblown Greywacke silt. The faintest lift of crushed Kaffir Lime leaf gives a sense of aromatic infinity. Lime, limes and more limes flood the entry of this wine. Then there’s the build of weight and resonance, acidity playing with phenolics playing with extract. Pithy and crunchy acidity with a silky glide of texture drive juicy length and persistence.While quite thirst quenching, be careful because I think the moreish-ness of this wine can only lead to a second bottle. The wine requires not so much as a food match but a food experience. Get in Boat, Find Kingfish, Catch Kingfish, Celebrate with glass of Riesling, prepare Kingfish Sashimi and Ceviche, Drink more Riesling, Enjoy. " - PJ Charteris

Express Same Day Delivery is available for Sydney postcodes within 10km of the CBD. There is a $10 delivery surcharge and the order is needs to be placed before 12pm midday weekdays for same day delivery. Express courier deliveries cannot be left unattended and require a receiver signature.

Do I have to order in dozens?

No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts?

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. Does Different Drop have a physical store?

Can I special order a wine you do not sell?

If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
