2016 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi Reserva

Piemonte, Italy

A rich and structured Barbaresco Nebbiolo that still has its best years ahead of it

About The Wine

The Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi Reserva is a barrel-selection wine showcasing the best of the vineyard in the best vintages.

With vines planted between 1950 and 1980, their maturity gives the wine depth and concentration of fruit characters, showing the red spectrum of cherry, as well as raspberry and some spicy depth from liquorice and violet, revealing the more floral and "pretty" side of this rich wine.

It has oodles of structure and body on the palate, with the tannins showing that this wine is still nowhere near its best, but if you like your Barbarescos when they're still relatively young, you're in for a marvellous treat with this wine.

About Albino Rocca

Albino Rocca is one of the premier producers in Barbaresco. Their wines have an air of effortless transparency and elegance about them, showing the charms and beauty of Piemonte with traditional winemaking and great vineyards as the foundations.

Following Angelo Rocca's tragic passing in 2012, his three daughters (Daniela, Monica and Paola) have taken the estate to new heights, consistently releasing outstanding blended and single vineyard Barbarescos, and driving the quality of the Barbera and Dolcetto to new heights.

They were recently awarded “Green Experience” certification - a brand dedicated to the wines of Piedmont aiming at a collective, integrated and sustainable certification for the region. The accreditation promotes both conservation of natural resources and protection of the magnificent, rolling landscape. Its goal is an ecological viticulture achieved via natural agricultural techniques and decreased use of chemicals.

Critic Reviews

Wine Enthusiast

"Camphor, crushed violet and ripe berry aromas mingle with notes of dark spice on this fragrant, full-bodied red. On the elegantly structured palate, tightly knit, refined tannins support raspberry compote, mature cherry and licorice. It's still young but well-balanced, with fresh acidity. Drink 2024–2031." Kerin O’Keefe (Wine Enthusiast)

The Real Review

"Bright garnet, orange tints. Delightful aromas of morello cherry and raspberry, rosehip tea, licorice and baking spices, very complex. On the palate there is both fluidity and elegance, tangy berry fruit carried by brisk acidity and chalky minerality, a fan of filigree tannins coating the mouth, the wine building to a very long and already harmonious finish. Cellaring will make it even better. Outstanding." Stephen Blandford (The Real Review)

"The beauty of the 2016 vintage is its restraint in youth, but its not easy to approach. It's a traditional vintage which might appeal to mature drinkers rather than drinkers with a sweet tooth. This Ronchi Riserva certainly lives up to the 'traditional' moniker. A restrained, super-fresh nose of red berries and violet is supported by a dense, opulent structure built to last. The palate is massive but ripe, with an elegant cherry kernel finish. It lacks a bit of complexity at present, but I would wait for it. Drinking Window 2022 - 2036." - Aldo Fiordelli (Decanter)
