About
From bush vines planted in 1946 high on our Estate’s deep sandy soils, our Old Vine Grenache is complex, elegant and enticing. This wine is a cornerstone of expressing our estate.

About the Wine

Yangarra is, quite simply, one of Australia's finest producers of Grenache.

Their remarkable, certified biodynamic vineyard in the higher reaches of McLaren Vale produces a fleet of awe-inspiring Grenache, with this 'Old Vine' release being the heart and soul of the lineup.

The fruit comes from 70-year-old, non-irrigated bush vines, with Yangarra's incredible winery doing its bit to maintain all the purity of fruit and natural vineyard character in the wine. It's not jubey and juicy, nor is it rich and inky - this is an emphatically perfumed, seriously structured, utterly delicious Grenache that will only improve with time in the cellar.

About Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Halliday Wine Companion

"From bush vines planted in 46, 50% whole-berries, wild yeast and kept on lees in used French oak for 10 months. So fragrant it's breathtaking. To start, a whirl of perfectly ripe raspberries and red currants, patchouli and subtle Middle Eastern spices. The palate is tightly wound, with raspberry-like acidity, more pronounced tannins in the background. They'll meet up in time." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is one of the most exciting wines I have tried in a long time. Wildly intense with bright maraschino cherry aromas and flavours. The palate is young, taut and tactile with cherry pip vibrancy and shimmering spice. The barely perceptible savouriness gives the wine depth and character. Highly recommended." - Toni Patterson (The Real Review)

The Wine Front

"McLaren Vale grenache grown on bush vines, planted 1946. Meticulously berry-sorted prior to crushing. Cold soaked, wild fermented, left alone, pressings excluded, bottled unfined. Certified biodynamic. Robust grenache, sizeable, slathered with toasty/creamy oak and plush throughout. Grenache with the works, sure, but complex. Deli meats, spices, redcurrant and plums. Lots of oak, too much arguably, but seductive with it. Intricately tannic yet overall it remains supple. Fabulous booze, so long as oak doesn’t annoy you. It drinks beautifully now but it has a future." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

VINEYARD INFORMATION

Sourced solely from vines which were planted in 1946, these old bush vines are not irrigated and are pruned to an average of 20 buds per vine and shoot thinned to the same number in Spring to ensure there is balance to the canopy with each bunch being evenly spread. The vineyard is certified Biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. We have quite a practical approach, with our philosophy focused around healthy and alive soil, which involves no use of synthetic herbicides or fungicides, use of compost and biodynamic preparations, use of sheep in winter to graze under vine, and minimal mechanical soil disruption.

WINEMAKING INFORMATION

Hand-picked and received via a belt elevator, de-stemmed and then sorted via two sorting tables, resulting in tubs of perfectly whole berries, of which half are crushed. These tubs are then tipped into our open fermenters, where the must is cold-soaked for 5-6 days and undergoes wild fermentation. A careful regime of only plunging to minimize over extraction is carried out, before the wine was sent to older French barriques after about 12-14 days. No Pressings are used. The wine in barrel was kept on the yeast lees for approximately 8 months prior to blending. The wine received no fining, just filtration. Bottled in February 2016. Certified Biodynamic.
