"I wrote pure multiple times on this one: a nose like pure wild strawberry and the "mouth too, with crystalline purity".
Neil Collins (Winemaker Tablas Creek) 2019
About This Wine
The Tablas Creek Vineyard Esprit de Tablas is a blend of four estate-grown varietals, propagated from budwood cuttings from the Château de Beaucastel estate.
The wine is based on the dark red fruit, earth, spice and mid-palate richness of Mourvèdre, with additions of Grenache for forward fruit, approachability and lushness, Syrah for mineral, aromatics, and back-palate tannins, and Counoise for brambly spice and acidity.
It’s fresh and lively, the tannins firm yet light, dancing on the tongue with flower-petal spice. It wouldn’t be a stretch to connect this lightness of tone directly to the pale, fragile limestone bedrock underneath the vines that allowed them to access moisture through California’s long dry spell.
About Tablas Creek
Tablas Creek is the realisation of the combined efforts of two of the international wine community’s leading families: the Perrin family, proprietors of Chateau de Beaucastel (CNdP), and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands. Equally owned and run by the two families, the partnership begun in 1987 remains today as ever, even as the next generation of Haases and Perrins have stepped into leadership roles over recent decades.
Located in the hills north and west of Paso Robles, their viticulture practices emphasize quality through dry-farming and moderate crop levels. they farm organically, and have been certified since 2003, while since 2017 have also been certified biodynamic.
With a real focus on sustainability, in 2020 they became the first American winery to be regenerative organic certified as well.
