About
This is nothing short of electrifying... It has power, design and structure yet purity, too, and extraordinary length. It takes complexity to a new level.

About the Wine

Peter Schell is regarded as one of the most influential winemakers in the recent renaissance of the Barossa Valley. Pete paved the way for a new breed of Barossa winemakers with stunning wines like this: his flagship wine, La Maline.

Made in only tiny quantities, La Maline is a more elegant side of Barossa Shiraz. The fruit is sourced from four vineyards in the higher parts of the north-west Barossa, Moculta, Eden Valley and the Eastern foothills. With the deft touch we have come to expect from this producer, the fruit undergoes a wild ferment in large format oak (about 30% new) and sees a healthy dose of whole bunches and a small amount of Viognier skins for aromatic lift.

It is a pleasure to drink this wine. Finesse and intricacy combine effortlessly with the brooding power of the region. 97 points from James Halliday and all in all, a beautiful wine.

About Spinifex

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley, and very much a pioneer of the changing direction of this famous region.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Pete’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region; they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.  These are brilliant Barossa wines.

Halliday Wine Companion

"This is nothing short of electrifying. It's as if a ball of energy has been created with a core of tiptop dark fruit laced with pepper, menthol, star anise and patchouli. There are high tones to the floral notes, creaminess on the full-bodied palate, velvety tannins and integrated cedary oak. It has power, design and structure yet purity, too, and extraordinary length. It takes complexity to a new level." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Additional Info

From the Producer

In 2015 we were able to produce 290 cases of La Maline. With La Maline we are seeking a pure, finely structured expression of Barossa Shiraz. Key contributers in achieving this are vine age, site altitude, a soil sympathetic to the style and dedicated vineyard husbandry. Vineyard altitudes range from between 360 and 500 m asl, three Vineyards are in Eden Valley and one is in the Barossa Valley. Vine age averages around 75 years.

Soils are poor, generally loamy sands sitting over varied parent material bases, all are unirrigated. Vinification was kept relatively simple. All fruit was hand harvested and cooled overnight. Around 30-40% of bunches were retained and fermented as whole clusters, the balance were destemmed.

Approximately 1 % pressed Viognier marc was added during fermentation which were are undertaken in small open stainless steel and wooden fermenters with indigenous yeasts. Maceration times were generally between 12-20 days. Elevage on light lees was undertaken in a selection of thick staved 600 L demi muids and barriques. Unfined and bottled without filtration.
