This is nothing short of electrifying... It has power, design and structure yet purity, too, and extraordinary length. It takes complexity to a new level.
About the Wine
Peter Schell is regarded as one of the most influential winemakers in the recent renaissance of the Barossa Valley. Pete paved the way for a new breed of Barossa winemakers with stunning wines like this: his flagship wine, La Maline.
Made in only tiny quantities, La Maline is a more elegant side of Barossa Shiraz. The fruit is sourced from four vineyards in the higher parts of the north-west Barossa, Moculta, Eden Valley and the Eastern foothills. With the deft touch we have come to expect from this producer, the fruit undergoes a wild ferment in large format oak (about 30% new) and sees a healthy dose of whole bunches and a small amount of Viognier skins for aromatic lift.
It is a pleasure to drink this wine. Finesse and intricacy combine effortlessly with the brooding power of the region. 97 points from James Halliday and all in all, a beautiful wine.
Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley, and very much a pioneer of the changing direction of this famous region.
Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Pete’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region; they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.
There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. These are brilliant Barossa wines.
