About The Wine

This is Canberra renegade winery Mount Majura's signature blend.

The focus here is not varietal expression, but a sense of place and, “letting the character of the site express itself through whatever varieties are best suited”. All the fruit for this blend is sourced from a single vineyard on the Mount Majura estate. The wine this year is built from 49% Tempranillo, 36% Shiraz and 15% Graciano - three varieties that get along brilliantly.

The 2015 season has been hyped as one of the best for Canberra in decades, and you can really sense that in every drop of this wine. With a huge 96 points from James Halliday, this is the highest rated vintage of this wine to date. Creative alternative blends can offer very interesting drinking, and this is one of the best.

From The Producer

Typically complex, this signature blend from our vineyard combines spice, black and red fruits with hints of game and new leather. Medium in weight, it is deliciously snappy yet fine and soft.

There is no doubt that varietal labelling (i.e. single-variety wines, labelled by the variety) helps make wine approachable and understandable. It does put an emphasis on the variety however, when sometimes the emphasis should be on the vineyard. In other words, letting the character of the site express itself through whatever varieties are best suited, and not being distracted by the characteristics of individual varieties.

First made in 2008, this blend received immediate acclaim and success, winnning numerous gold medals.

Halliday Wine Companion

"Bright crimson-purple; Mount Majura has a distinguished track record with this blend, and this is yet another extremely good example. What puts it at the front of its class is the balance, texture and synergy, and I shouldn't forget the structure, possibly its best feature. It isn't some spare parts cobbled together because they're Iberian or Italian or whatever: everything sings in perfect harmony." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Canberra Times

"A blend of 49% tempranillo, 36% shiraz and 15% graciano, TSG thrills with its vivid purple colour, sweet, seductive aroma and vibrant, harmonious palate. The absolutely delicious palate features the liveliest, freshest fruit flavour imaginable, all held together by savoury tannins that give the wine smooth texture." - Chris Shannahan (Canberra Times)

The Wine Front

"You have to admire the way this wine goes about things. It sees mostly old oak (only 7% new), it leans towards tempranillo in the blend (49%) but it includes that lipsmacking injection of graciano (15%). It’s a relatively small production (868 dozen) and so it’s blended not so much for volume, as for character. “(By blending) we take the spotlight off the variety, and put it back on the vineyard.” The good thing here is that it delivers straight-out juicy drinkability, both delicious and honest, but then folds firm, almost slatey tannin beneath and so, in the process, adds a sense of substance, of structural control. It’s a jubey red, spicy, perfumed and well polished. It’s one of those you-cannot-go-wrong-here reds. This wine has picked up the odd rave, and the odd gold medal, in its journey into public life. It’s not hard to fathom why." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
