Description

Touriga is one variety making a surge across a myriad of Australian wine regions at the moment.

Many winemakers are falling in love with its high-toned aromatics and luscious, juicy mid palate: winemakers like Mount Majura's Frank van der Loo. He has long championed cool-climate Tempranillo, and this Touriga is yet another step towards broadening the scope of Canberra District red wines.

On this release, Mike Bennie says, "Really yummy, is the expression here." It's a fantastic alternative to more traditional styles of reds commonly produced in the region, inbuilt with moreish intrigue.

A rare variety in a cool climate, our Touriga shows ripe spicy blueberry fruit and a soft, talcy perfume. There are hints of soy and liquorice and the palate has a wonderful velvety texture. After the success of the Spanish varieties Tempranillo and Graciano in our vineyard, it was logical to also trial one of the highest-quality red varieties of neighbouring Portugal.

Touriga has been grown for many years in warmer parts of Australia, where it has been used for fortifieds, like the ports of its homeland. It also makes great table wine, and is a late ripener for our climate, so we have no intention of making a fortified, but are intrigued by the velvety texture, deep colour, fascinating aromatics and lovely savoury earthy characters that it can produce.

This is the second release (after 2013) and volumes are slowly increasing as new plantings come into bearing.

91 Points - "Geez, winemaker Frank van der Loo is really doing some very fine, interesting things from Mount Majura. Understated as he is, these wines are making a bold statement in a region that though high profile for fine shiraz red wines, could do with going up another notch with broader expression. Here are some. Here is one. Loads of spice, like a ute's shovelled a load of cumin, clove, pepper, lavender into a swamp of boysenberry and blueberry fruit. Such pretty fragrance, and spice doubles back in the blue-fruited, soft, fleshy palate. It's just medium weight, shows a bit of a smudge of tannin, finishes fresh and herbal-spicy. No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
