About the Wine

Eleana and Bryan at Mayford in Porepunkah produce some of the finest boutique wines in the Alpine Valleys. Their small vineyard in Porepunkah consistently produces fruit of epic intensity and utter class. Their latest release of Shiraz could very well be their best to date.

As described by Campbell Mattinson in his colossal 96 point review, "We have ourselves something special here." James Halliday seemed to agree with his 96 point review dubbing it, "a siren calling you to come onto the rocks."

The beauty of a cool-climate combined with the power of fruit ripened in a warmer year. It's a brilliant combination and one that has been perfectly realised by Eleana. Kudos.

About Mayford

Mayford has been a work in progress since 1995, now they are one of the leading producers in the Alpine Valley. Setting the bar high, are Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson. Very high indeed.

They only produce three wines; Chardonnay, Shiraz, and one of the country’s best Tempranillo. Everything is grown on their own estate. From the vine to the bottle, this couple does it all themselves. Small batches of wine with only quality in mind. Right up our alley.

About Alpine Valleys

The Alpine Valley is one of the most fascinating emerging regions of Australian wine.

Not bound by the traditions of some of its more established neighbouring Victorian regions, the Alpine Valleys is combining the natural freshness its cool climate delivers with a willingness to experiment with alternative varieties to kick some huge goals.

The productions are small, the quality is high and this cool climate region is on a mission to stamp its authority on Australian wine.

The Wine Front

"Porepunkah Shiraz, re-defined. Mayford shiraz has been a beautiful thing on many occasions but this release arguably takes the cake. It shifts the conversation slightly. It feels finer, longer, more confident, more Burgundian. Cherries, chocolate, coffee and sweet spices, and ample quantities of each, all come as a seamless whole; there's no jostling here, the flavours come as a team. There's a raspberried brightness; a meatiness too. The flavours then all ripple through the tannin like a creek through rapids. We have ourselves something special here." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Dramatically different to the '16, as it should be, with 13 clones of shiraz made in small batches, variously spending 3-8 weeks on skins, matured for 22 months in French barriques (36% new). It's luscious, it fills the mouth and then some with its multifaceted purple and black fruits, rounded tannins and high quality oak judged to perfection. One of those wines tempting you to have a mouthful or so - a siren calling you to come onto the rocks." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Additional Info

From the Producer

Vintage

Spectacularly mild, dry conditions in 2015 resulted in low-yielding and super elegant Shiraz that will stand the test of time.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Hand-picked in small parcels over the last three weeks of March in 2015, the Shiraz came off in perfect condition. Some whole bunch influence has brought floral and spice characters to the brooding dark berry fruit. New clonal plantings contribute an unprecedented level of perfume and fragrance- the original 22 year old shiraz block bringing maturity, depth and power. Time on lees and extended post-fermentation maceration yielded earthy notes and a firm tannic core, which should see this wine live well into the future.

Tasting Note

A gorgeously pure fruited wine – perfumed with musk, aniseed, sandalwood and violet notes. Dark, cool fruit and chocolate dusted oak weave together in perfect synergy. Tightly wound, finely structured with lashings of detail.
