2015 Luciano Sandrone Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba Sibi et Paucis

Piemonte, Italy

High-toned Nebbiolo released after years of cellaring by the Sandrone Family. Exquisite stuff.

... hits all the right marks and is drinking beautifully at this point in time.

About The Wine

2015 is a great vintage to look at Nebbiolo with some years under its a belt - a warm season with some tremendous power and raciness.

With Sandrone's Sibi et Paucis, 'the few and the favoured', cellaring program we are lucky to get an accelerated look at high-toned Nebbiolo such as this Valmaggiore expression from Roero.

It's wonderfully floral, still very primary, with bright cherry fruit and a powerful, layered palate with tobacco and rocky notes evolving.

Still many years of life ahead but boy it looks good now.

About Luciano Sandrone

Luciano Sandrone is the founding father of this famous Barolo producer and he is still powers on, even though he is now into his 80s. The domaine, started effectively in his garage in 1970s, remains all in the family.

They are based in the commune and town of Barolo itself, in the shadow of the famous hillside vineyard Cannubi Boschis, source of their most renowned wines.

They now boast 27 hectares of vines in Barolo, Langhe and Roero. Organic viticulture is key, as is elongated skin contact for Nebbiolo and natural yeast fermentation.

As well as historically brilliant Barolo, they also produce extremely high-quality Dolcetto and Barbera which may change the way you perceive those varieties.

From the Producer

The Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d’Alba 2015 is a noble wine that shows great natural elegance, heightened by its complex perfume.

On the nose, the floral aspects are now dominant, showing violets, rose and iris, compensated by deep strawberries and cherries with a note of licorice.

On the palate, the sweetness of the tannins and strawberry fruit jump out; these are persistent in the mouth, and characteristic of Valmaggiore Nebbiolo.

The wine has lost of touch of its initial raciness over the last 4 years in bottle, but still possesses excellent freshness. It has gained considerably in weight, balance and complexity, and the finish is very long with excellent sweet tannins.

The Wine Advocate

“This late-release wine takes us back in time to a beautifully sunny and warm vintage. The Luciano Sandrone 2015 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore Sibi et Pauci hit all the right marks and is drinking beautifully at this point in time. The wine reveals an ideal mix of primary and tertiary aromas, with dried cherry and plum backed by crushed flowers, licorice and smoke. Enjoy it with a typical Piedmont tajarin and shaved truffles.” - Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)
