2015 La Violetta Le Rayon V Malbec Cabernet

Great Southern, WA

Only the fourth time this rare bird has been made by AJ Hoadley.

About The Wine

Winemaking can be an unpredictable business, constantly at the wanton will of Mother Nature, but every so often she throws you a gem.

In 2015, La Violetta owner/winemaker Andrew Hoadley was offered some extraordinarily good Malbec and a little Cabernet from an old dry-grown vineyard near Mount Barker in WA.

An extended maceration and judicious oak maturation eventually yielded only 700 bottles of this rarely made wine. It's the result of a right place, right time scenario and may not be made again.

With only 58 dozen made and Mike Bennie's comments that "It’s a compelling wine here. Cabernet fanciers will be very well served. Next level from this release too."

This is one for premium collectors of unique and boutique wines. An unforced and restrained wine with power and elegance in toe.

About La Violetta

Few winemakers bring as much creativity and flair to their label as the mercurial Andrew Hoadley.

With a mischievous, child-like joy, he has set about crafting La Violetta, one of the most fascinating wine ranges in Western Australia, and indeed, the country.

His wines are inspiring, each a creation all of its own.

With a mix of single vineyard, single varietal wines and some exotic blends, these some of the most thought-provoking wines in the West.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"From the Colline-Foret vineyard, one of note in the far flung Great Southern of Western Australia. As intense as a fabric rayon is to wear, so too is the fruit quality here. Or something like that. Of course, the ‘le rayon’ reference is far more cerebral than that, and there’s a Rimbaud quote on the back label so that elevates things too. Wine and higher intelligence at play, who’d a thunk it? Geez, ya gotta love HRH Andrew Hoadley, the man who makes La Violetta happen. This is a pretty intense, slick textured red, but it keeps you fascinated, involved, diving back into your glass to check the perfume, get the texture, feel the concentration. I was sipping it idly and got lost back in my glass while mid conversation with someone. I like wines like that. There’s lavender, cassis, liquorice, dark chocolate and plum in perfume, a similar array of things in the medium-to-just-fuller weight, slightly sticky textured palate. Tannins are drying-paint-tacky, slightly savoury with black olive tapenade-like feel. It’s a compelling wine here. Cabernet fanciers will be very well served. Next level from this release too." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
