About The Wine

Almirante y Obispo translates to "The Admiral and the Bishop" in Spanish.

This combines Grenache, Mataro and Tempranillo into what winemaker Andrew Hoadley describes as "an unholy alliance".

Unholy it may be, but it's definitely a tasty trio in this blend. Spicy Grenache meets gamey Mataro and the ferrous, mineral quality of Tempranillo from this part of the world makes for a full-bodied, cellar-worthy red wine that screams for food loaded with spice.

It's a unique wine in the Great Southern and one of the few blends of this ilk in the country.

About La Violetta

Few winemakers bring as much creativity and flair to their label as the mercurial Andrew Hoadley.

With a mischievous, child-like joy, he has set about crafting La Violetta, one of the most fascinating wine ranges in Western Australia, and indeed, the country.

His wines are inspiring, each a creation all of its own.

With a mix of single vineyard, single varietal wines and some exotic blends, these some of the most thought-provoking wines in the West.

From The Producer

Almirante y Obispo (in Spanish, it means “Admiral and Bishop”) is an unholy alliance between small, low-cropped parcels of Mediterranean grape varieties from Geographe sub-regions. This uncommon blend unites the weight and spiciness of Garnacha, the wild gaminess of Mataró and the minerality and tannic structure of Tempranillo. Further nuance and complexity is derived from extended maceration, natural yeasts, co-fermentation, inclusion of stalks and whole bunches in the ferment.

A spicy, gutsy, cosmic red. Say your prayers.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"WA’s south-west seems a natural home for these varieties, producing a wine of striking power, balance and complexity. Large format old oak barrels are used in ageing, allowing savoury expression and aromatic nuance to come to the fore. The 2015 vintage shows red fruits, game and garrigue. The palate opens up to spice, herbal notes and pan-dimensional phenolics, gripping yet letting go, like the sea rolling in across the sand." - La Violetta

The Wine Front

"Sloshes around palate well, juicy and dried berry-like, light amaro notes, minty, fresh, but generally just works a good mojo. Juicy, enough tannin, good brisk acidity. A bit dry and dusty for some but kind of feels in the program for the wine. Tannins are very good. Quite compelling, and feels right for longer cellar time. I’m very down with this." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
