About The Wine

This is a very special release for virtuoso winemaker, Steve Pannell.

Koomilya is a vineyard on the very edge of the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. This site has grown grapes for over 100 years and now finds itself under Steve's watchful eye.

It's one of Steve's proudest accomplishments, and rightfully so, the wine is incredible. This is Shiraz as pure and unadorned as possible. The truest representation of this special site that Steve could produce.

A wine for the real collectors, this is premium McLaren Vale Shiraz at its seductive best.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

Dark, rugged and voluptuous wine, here. Sumptuous satsuma plum, black licorice, and the faintest lick of oak. It ripples with tannin and slinks through the palate. Slender, but ripe, it's a hitman in an Armani suit. Simply gorgeous. - Different Drop Wine Team

Halliday Wine Companion

"From a block of 80yo vines on the estate Koomilya Vineyard. Hand-picked, 10 days on skins, pressed to tank, thence to used puncheons for 14 months. Deeply coloured, this immediately sets the rules of the game as it looks back 50 years ensuring it is the fruit that speaks, not the winemaker, St Henri, not Grange. Black fruits, sombre notes of earth and persistent, but ripe, tannins fill the mouth. The future of this wine stretches out of the horizon of the mind." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

DDS review

"Made from 80-year-old vines, wild-fermented and matured for 14 months in oak puncheons, this is superb shiraz very much in the restrained, age-worthy, old-school style (think Wendouree, Tahbilk, etc). Dense and tightly wound at first, it opens with air to reveal hints of eucalypt, concentrated dark black fruit, beef jus and supple, earthy, clay-like tannins. " - Max Allen (Australian Financial Review)

The Wine Front

"It’s quite different to the JC block, although, of course, similar. Like siblings, perhaps. Here we have cherries steeped in brandy, mint, iron, juice of prune and plum, though freshness is not taken hostage as a result. Dense, a bit chewy, a little warmth, but like a hug from an old friend, long lost, but well met. Ink wells and old desks, brine and blackberry. Sweet and savoury on a long and umami finish. Terrific. Verity and integrity. It’s a wonderful wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Are there volume discounts?

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll match it. We'll even retrospectively refund you if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me?

This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store?

No, not really. More of a warehouse/office. We do however offer a Click & Collect option from our warehouse in Ultimo, Sydney. Our warehouse address for Click & Collect is: F5A, 42 Wattle St, Ultimo, 2007

Can I special order a wine you do not sell?

If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
