About The Wine

Steve Pannell has a deep love for the classic old Australian wines of the 1960s.

It was in this hay-day that Steve says that Australian wines looked more like the vineyard than the hand of the winemaker. It's with this idea in mind that Steve has brought this classic Aussie blend to bottle.

It's predominantly Cabernet from 70-year-old vines planted on Koomilya with 20% Shiraz from some of the 'younger' vines (though still planted in the 1970s) on the block.

It's got power and structure and couldn't come from anywhere else but Steve's block.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Aroma: Western red cedar, red currants, blackcurrant, mace, rhubarb and vanilla pods. Palate: Medium-bodied, with a sweet-fruited, drying and persistent palate of musk sticks, Pekoe tea leaves, layers of red fruits, red clay tiles and pancetta. A strangely and unexpectedly Italian style." - Steve Pannell

DDS review

"There's been a revival of interest in the classic Australian "claret" style of cabernet shiraz blends, and this is an excellent example: wild-fermented and matured in large, 2500-litre casks, it's a bright, tangy, elegant wine with attractive aromas of currants and dried herbs, and fine powdery tannins. Like all the Koomilya reds, it will reward extended cellaring. " - Max Allen (Australian Financial Review)

The Wine Front

"The old 80/20 rule. I’ve not tasted the Shiraz wines, so don’t ask. These wines put me in mind of how Rockford used to taste.Floral, but iodine and earthy, cedar and mint, red and black fruits, baking spice. It’s medium-bodied, soft and supple, such an easy charm and grace about it, fine powdery tannin, inner mouth-perfume, perfect acidity, and a very long finish where the tannin unfurls and shapes up the wine beautifully. Roses and dirt. Bass and treble. Classic Aussie red." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
