About

About The Wine

After a lifetime of making wine in the Barossa Valley, John Duval has access to some of the region's most precious vines.

In the most excellent vintages, he sets aside a small portion of the Grenache he acquires to be vinified and bottled as a stand-alone Grenache release. The Annexus is one of the most compelling expressions of Grenache in the famous region. Ancient vines in the hands of a master.

It doesn't get much better than this.

Mike Bennie noted in his stunning 95+ point review, "This is as elegant and seamless a grenache I have seen from Australia."

It's a wine of great detail and finesse and will make a superb addition to the cellars of all Grenache enthusiasts.

About John Duval

John Duval is an international winemaking legend, and one of our country's bonafide wine superstars. For 29 years he was a winemaker (16 years as chief) at Barossa Valley winery Penfolds, and was responsible during that time for putting together Grange and his signature wine, the RWT.

For the last decade plus, Duval has spent his time traversing the globe, making high-quality wines in Europe, the North-West of the USA and even Chile. But his love remains the Barossa Valley, with his private label wines representing a chance to try some stunning wines at very reasonable prices.

Now with his own label (established in 2003) in full-flight and his son Tim stepping into the family business, John's legacy as one of the Barossa Valley's finest winemakers of his generation continues to grow.

The Wine Front

"All grenache, all time. This is winemaking guru John Duval’s two best grenache plots, including a parcel from 150-year-old vines. Open top fermenters play a part in the winemaking, as does an inclusion of whole bunch in the ferments. All older oak for the 12 months it hands out in barrel. If I was making grenache, this is how I would do it, says the sophist in me. Power, grace, finesse, flavour, tannin-structure, deliciousness, drinkability. Couldn’t ask for more. This is as elegant and seamless a grenache I have seen from Australia. Fine web of tannin gives additional succulence to cool, even, medium weight red fruit and spice flavours. Epic in length, total restraint, pure-feeling and energetic. It’s beautiful wine here. Utterly." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
