About The Wine

In search of elegance and concentration in his Shiraz/Syrah, Neil Jericho heads to the Adelaide Hills here for some special fruit from a special site.

This vineyard crops insanely low, only half a tonne of fruit per acre coming off these vines. The berries small and super-concentrated, the resulting wines may be Neil's finest expression of this variety.

To tame the power of this fruit, Neil leaves this wine on skins for more than a month, a small portion of whole bunch included in the ferment.

This wine is sleek, smooth and spicy. A beautiful example of Hills Syrah that received 95 points from James Halliday.

About Jericho

Jericho is one of the most exciting emerging producers in South Australia, consistently churning out delicious, characterful and brilliantly priced wines in all styles.

Family owned and run with experienced winemaker Neil Jericho at the helm, they source both traditional and alternative varieties from various vineyards around McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Neil sums up the Jericho philosophy: “in every wine I like to see varietal flavour and character. I don’t want to overpower the fruit with oak. It’s got to be in balance, with nothing sticking out. They’ve got to be drinkable!”

Modern, creative and smashable wines and across the range, amazing value.

Critic Reviews

95Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"The bouquet is full of fragrant red fruits and spices, the palate underlining the power of the fruit with its long, balanced finish and aftertaste." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

93Points
The Wine Front

"This has a delicious future ahead of it. It combines fruit and oak to excellent effect but it has an inherent complexity just itching for a bit more bottle age. It tastes of blueberry, red liquorice and black cherry, splashes dried herbs and cedarwood about, and has a perfumed water-based feel to it; it’s very much in the “Burgundian Shiraz” mould. Beautiful drinking." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Winemakers Notes
We use the French term, Syrah, instead of Shiraz to describe the style of this wine. The cool climate of the Adelaide Hills has a strong influence on the style of this wine and differentiates it from many other Australian regions’ Shiraz.

The wine was fermented and held on skins for 33 days. Together with 10% of the stalks included in the ferment has created a beautifully balanced, complex and soft wine. The tannins are soft and silky from the extended skin contact making interesting and elegant wine.

Vineyards
This Vineyard sits atop a wind swept ridge at just under 350m above sea level. The shallow rocky soil, non-irrigated dry farming and harsh conditions forces these vines to dig deep. Cropping at a mere 0.5 tonne per acre, the result are ultra concentrated, small berries which reflect the vineyard site.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
