About the Wine
South of Saumur, in the hamlet of Berrie, François St-Lô makes distinctive wines, riffing on the classic grapes of the Loire Valley.
Originally a native of Normandy, François fell in love with wine whilst working in the heart of the heady Paris Wine bar scene in the 2000s.
Treated to seriously long ageing in both old casks and bottle before release, it’s suave with smokey black cherry, violets and herbal flower stems. Small scale, exceptional, silken textured Cabernet Franc.
About François St-Lô
François St-Lô has quickly become a rising star in the world of natural wine; quite a feat considering his first vintage was only in 2012. Initially learning the trade from legendary mentors like Olivier Cousin & Eric Dubois, he eventually bought his own place near Berrie, approximately 25km south of Saumur.
His place is within troglodyte caves deep in Saumur François Saint-Lô known as the Rue Des Belles Caves. Basically an ancient ruin, it had previously been used for wine production and since 2012 is being restored with the help of friends. With a labyrinth of underground caves, an almost prehistoric cellar and an 18th century wine press, François manages to make transformative, character-filled wines from a selection of old vineyards near Anjou.
