About
There’s a northern Rhone-esque feel to the wine, though it is wholly its own thing, and wonderful.

About the Wine

The Shiraz By Farr is a Shiraz made like a Pinot Noir.

This is from vines planted in 1994 as part of Gary Farr's original plantings. In most vintages, a small amount of Viognier is either co-fermented or back blended to enhance fragrance and texture. If there were such a thing as a "Burgundian style Shiraz" in Australia, this might be it. Silky, slippery and spicy, this is a wonderful expression of Shiraz from a great Australian vineyard.

The 2015 received 96 points from James Halliday and is a great vintage for this wine.

About By Farr / Farr Rising

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in Victoria, or indeed, the country. He was responsible for taking Bannockburn in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is quite simply one of Australia's finest producers.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier. With Gary's son Nick now making the wines, as well as taking his own Farr Rising label to monumental heights, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

If you want to see one of the country's great winemaking families at work, anything by the Farrs will be one of the best examples of its kind in the country. Sheer class, guaranteed.

From The Producer

Vineyard

Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone.

Vinification

All fruit is hand-picked from the VSP trellising, with 20 per cent left as whole bunches in the fermentation. Most years we co-ferment between 2 and 4 per cent viognier with the shiraz, the date determining whether or not the former is co-fermented and bled back. It is a natural fermentation, with the fruit remaining in the tank for 19 days before pressing. Shiraz sees 18 months in French oak, 20 per cent being new, and is bottled under vacuum.

Blend : Shiraz (98%), Viognier (2%)
ABV : 13.5%
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2035
Bottle Size : 750ml

Halliday Wine Companion

"The aromas are particularly complex and fragrant, charcuterie and allspice decorating the concourse of black cherry and satsuma plum of the bouquet and medium to full-bodied palate. The management of the viognier addition, the tannins, and the oak, made perfect by long practice." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

Touch of smoke, game meat, stewed cherry-red berry. Really pleasing, warm scents of ripe fruit, judicious spice, inviting a drinker in. Soft textured, sweet with cherry fruitiness, texture like velvet brushed the wrong way, great length of flavour, great depth of flavour. Licks of cherry sour-sweet fruit character and peppery-clove spice too. There’s a northern Rhone-esque feel to the wine, though it is wholly its own thing, and wonderful." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
