About the Wine

Another day, another excellent new Australian Fiano. It's hard not to get excited about this grape.

This comes from Margaret River cult hero Blue Poles - their first crack at Fiano. And what a good start! It's a more restrained and refreshing expression, but not without character and texture too.

91 points from Mike Bennie who reckoned it "Feels bang on for the variety.". A lovely food wine, a refreshing warm weather drink and super value.

About Blue Poles

Blue Poles is the venture of Mark Gifford and Tim Markwell - a pair of experienced geologists who have in the last decade or so created one of the undoubted 'cult hero' labels of Margaret River.

Their red wines are extraordinary not only for their old world charm and quality, but the outrageous value they deliver. Tiny volumes produced but definitely a producer to get to know.

"No, no, Mark Gifford hasn’t been secretly growing fiano on his vineyards. This comes from a mate’s vineyard somewhere in the north of Margaret River, ‘it’s a curio of sorts, but we’re excited by the variety’, Gifford quipped. The vines are six-or-so years old, the grapes also find their way into that nice version that Marq make. Feels bang on for the variety. Sniff of ginger in the nose, but it’s mostly pears and grassiness that waft out of the bouquet. Ultra refreshing thing to drink. Crisp, crackly texture with clarity of pear-like fruitiness, firm, thirst-crushing tang of acidity, good line of flavour through to the drizzle of mouthwatering stuff that finishes. It’s lean but packed with dry, tangy flavour. It’s from a seaside wine region to be drunk in sunshine by the seaside. Fair call. Good wine here." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
