About

About The Wine

Best's claim that "If our Great Western region were somehow prohibited from growing Shiraz, it would probably be just as famous for its Cabernets."

Looking at the quality, value and potential longevity of their Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon, it's hard to argue with them.

The 2015 hits that magic Cabernet sweet spot between approachability and cellarability, all wrapped up in an impressively elegant, medium-bodied package.

It received 95 points from James Halliday, and for a unique Cabernet that's great either right now or in the cellar, you'll struggle to find better value.

About Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

From The Producer

One of the greatest things about the Great Western wine region is its ability to successfully grow a broad range of grape varieties. Shiraz may be the regional hero, but Cabernet Sauvignon from the area can lay almost equal claim.

Cabernet Sauvignon from Great Western is even better when the fruit is grown at the right sites. Warm north-facing sites tend to produce the best fruit. As is common in other regions, Cabernet Sauvignon in Great Western is picked late in the vintage season to allow for good fruit flavour and texture. More time on the vine results in a supple wine with intense varietal characteristics.

Halliday Wine Companion

"This is all about showing how elegance and intensity can be woven together to create the perfect medium-bodied palate. Blackcurrant, a waft of leaf, a glimmer of eucalypt and cedary oak/tannin nuances all join hands to support each other on the long, fresh palate. Don't be deceived: this will stand proud for 30+ years thanks to its immaculate balance." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
